I always found the sword and shield to be underwhelming. My prefered build, is to use Dual wielding, but because of the downsides of DWing till you pretty much max it out, I start out the game using a 2h Sword. If I find some spiffy 1h weapons I'll swap over once my DW is at 3 (where the dmg pen is only -10%).

Get 1 in Scoundrel for Adrenaline, Walk in Shadows, and Winged Feet
Get 1 in Aerotheurge for Teleportation and Thunder Jump
Get 4 in Man-At-Arms for Battering Ram(N), Encourage(N), Whirlwind(A), Crippling Blow(A), and Flurry(M)

I'd also suggest putting a point into either Witchcraft (gets you Oath of Desecration and Undead Warrior, Vamp touch), or Geomancer (Boulder Bash, Summon Spider, Bless). Pick one, not both. Witchcraft is better imo, but takes longer to get a pet. Geo you can get spider early on, and boulder bash is good for dropping down oil for your mage/archer to set on fire.

Dump the rest of your points into WIllpower and Body Building, since you will need the defense.

My guide has a warrior section: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1311458980

Most of the advice is similar to Monkey's except that I would suggest getting BOTH Summon Spider & Summon Undead Warrior ASAP. You can rotate between the two and summon one while the other is on cooldown. Get 7 Spd early on so you can have 7 AP per turn to summon reliably.

I would also suggest taking the Grenadier talents (Pinpoint & Slingshot). Learn the Grenade recipes, make lotsa cheap grenades, and throw them around like candy.

Sword and shield is only useful later in the game around level 15 or so when you should have more or less a 50% block chance and Elemental Tortoise. At that point you are pretty much immortal. If you have a good 1h weapon such as a late crafted Buffalo Sabre or Sword of planets, and combine it with Oath of Desicration, you do respectable damage as well.

However, pretty much any other melee build will still out-damage 1H and Shield. The only time you really need to use it is if you have no summons for some reason or you are playing on a high difficulty with a mod that amps the game up to sadistic.

Early game 2h is best, there is a tiny difference in tankiness compared to 1h and shield but you get crits to deal alot more damage.
