This game is a bit overrated honestly - I mean when you look at the global achievements barely anyone has even finished half the game. So it makes all the positive reviews look...disingenious in retrospective view.
My guess, is that the hitbox of the large enemy was so big that in the cramped space the AI of the game couldn't factor it in, and thus the computer was trying to attack my party but ended up damaging its own instead.
You may be right - I've definitely seen them try and use magic or long range through objects they can't hit through - so it's possible that's the case there too.
It makes sense. Probably was the same situation on both cases. Considering also the amount of life removed from the enemy after the attack.
Speaking with a friend that had finished the game, he said that sometimes very weird bugs just happen: as example, walking through the map and finding corpses of enemies that died inexplicably and which you were supposed to fight. So, I think the bug that happened with me applies to this "category".
I cannot find anything related to this slime, but well, he dropped some loot when i killed him INSIDE the fight, and after the fight it seems like he won't drop loot if killed just some gold, i couldn't go to the fight mode no matter how many times i attacked him, he stays there, beeing killed dooing nothing.
