Tactician or classic?
Hi guys,

I want to start playing this game with a cleric and enchanter on tactician mode, but the problem is... I keep dying on the first fight (yes, the first fight). So, I am just curious - how difficult is this diffculty?

I think I will be able to beat those guys sooner of later (hopefully sooner) so I need to know whether it is good idea to keep playing on it or switch to classic difficulty.

The reason I am asking is because I already played on hard + ironman in many games, including Pilalrs of Eternity, Fallout and others, so I wanted a challenging game from the start here. But I never had any issues of beating enemies in the first fight, and here I have.

Any suggestions?

I just finsihed tach. mode yesteerday. I did not use any guide or look up anything(until probably the last area) but i would recommend(and im a vetern as you are) playing on normalor hard to just get a feel for the combat and then reroll. I found it very challenging but knowing what i know after 200hrs, i think i could breeze through it now. LOL. IM me if you have questions its an amazing game i cant stop playing.

Thanks. I already played the game for a few hours on classic mode just to feel the game (finished the first dungeoun and entered the city but I originally planned to play tactician mode). What is interesting is that I already lost 3 times the first battle. I simply do not get how to beat those guys with my party on that difficulty. It seems impossible, because even if I finish all skeletons, the poison cloud finishes my guys lol

So I am just curious, whetehr the problem is my party, me or anything else. Also, what was your party at the start?

Personally i think you have to have a summoner/ healer becasue you will be outnumbered in every fight and you will die a lot early. Are you talking about the fight outside the city in the rain? Did you grab the 2 companions first in the city? Make sure to explore the city itself at the start to gain exp. and those companions.

lol I am talking about the first fight on the island with skeletons on tactician. The first enemies you meet. I cannot even defeat them. When I said I finished the first dungeon I meant I played it on classic difficulty.

About the party, I really do not like battle mages or summoners, and wanted to play purely with fighter and cleric, but then I found out that you can take extra party memebrs so I decied to make a cleric and enchanter.

I am playing on tact currently. If you are refering to the last fight in the tutorial dungeon/tomb I split my guys and snuck one past the tomb to the doorway. Using the bow I found and some spells let that one do damage withou getting hitby the 2 archers. My other got up close to thetomb by snaking also before theguy opped out. So he was in good melee range. Position, spells, weapons and luck.

Yea i got wrecked their too thinking what the hell am i doing wrong. All i can say without spoilers is there are multiple ways to approach every encounter and a lot of them you can ignore.
And though you may not like a certain class none are tied to a certain skill. All of my charcters except 1 were mult tasked with different skill sets. Look i probably played and got wrecked over 20-30 hours and re rolled after starting on tachtician, started on normal(way too easy) and then rerolled on tachtician and still was challenging. The start is brutal IMO but in all honesty having the right skills at the start is vital and some patience, using the enviroment and what the enviroment offers. If any of that makes sense. : )

O crap after seeing m_archibolds post i kept thinking of a different fight. Yea, if that fight is difficult you need to look at your party. The first time as i said was getting wrecked and after learning a lot i wiped that section with no problem. Again its about learning the skills and enviroment and once you understand that it all comes together beutifully.

Ok thanks guys, but the problem is the same lol. I cannot beat those guys anyway lol :) The ones you need to defeat before entering the dungeon. I know it sounds noobish, but my party dies all the time. So I am just curious, whether it is possible to do anything with it with my current classes or do I need to reroll?

What are your starting skills? Did you take the character as it was or customized it? You can change some skills in the character creation screen. Also what weapons are you starting with? Did you find the reddish orange backpack near the corpse before getting to the steps?

I recommend playing in classic mode to begin with and restart on tactician difficulty once you're familiar with how things work. Tactician is meant to challenge people who have some experience with the game; it will be very unforgiving if you're trying to learn the basics.

in the first fights your abilities are pretty limited, so feel free to use in tactical difficulty your one use items like grenades etc. later you have much more options and dont need most of them anyway
tactical is not so hard when you use the tools you have, like elemental combos, properly and the game (sadly) tends to get easier over time

So, do I understand it right that tactician requres to have party with mages? From how I see things now, the game highly recommends to have a spellcaster in the party, and having just a rogue and fighter / cleric is not a good choice for beginners?

I am kinda not a fan of magic in computer games, so do you think it would be possible to play with party of rogue and fighter / cleric? I know there will be more npc who can join the party later, but I still want to have non-magic related party. And I want to ensure that it is in fact possible to play without heavy artillery support lol.

I see.... the problem is I do not want to rely on that elemental stuff, I do not want to do elemental combos. I want more conservative gameplay, though challenging.

no you dont need a mage to do it, scrolls, grenades, arrows, barrels are usable by non magic users with the same effect.
playing without elemental stuff is a bit like playing without healing, possible but much harder and you have to know exactly what to do and for example choose the right skills for your starting characters, maybe not the right thing for your first playthrough. to be fair, the elemental combos are a core mechanic which makes a lot of fun, not using them takes away a lot from the gameplay and tactical depth.
