Curious about the 'Romance' between the MCs

I heard somewhere any kind of romance was removed in this version from the original, but it was never really clear. Is it still possible to have your two main characters fall in love or is that no longer possible (if it ever was in the first place)?

Also on that note: Do they have to be a boy/girl or can it be boy/boy or girl/girl?

There is a romance hinted at between the main characters who can be of either gender (b/b,g/g b/g). It is implied in journal and diary writings and partially through the dialogue choices but never explicit.

The dialogue choices earlier in the game (how much the main characters agreed and how much they liked each other) can affect a small part of the end of the game, where their fate after the game is briefly mentioned. That is the same as the original release (though the end section of the game was rewritten for the EE, and a small epilogue area added, so they get a little more of a send off).
