Crafting is THE most important thing in the game.
1) Crafted weapons are the best in the game.
2) It's the best way to earn good money.
You can read about it in the guides that people made, including mine.
Cheers
Crafting is not "the most important" thing in the game, as the whole game is absolutely playable even without crafting.
But ! It is also useful, and specially if you're playing on higher difficulty modes.
Weapons craft is a bit overrated : it will consume precious (and quite rare) components to be powerful, and you can't decide all the bonuses. Looted weapons, with a bit of luck, may be more suitable.
But crafting/weaponsmithing allows you to apply bonuses on weapons or armors, combine items to create food and potions, create items for specific use (charisma amulet, for example, to equip before dialogs, etc...).
So I'd say crafting in D:OS is useful, and deserves attention. Depending on your will to play, and the difficulty, you can invest in, or not.
But a few points in crafting/blacksmithing will never be a loss.
Besides, crafting is almost impossible to "discover" by yourself : there are so many recipes, using so many components, that you must have a data-base to consult regularly.
for example : http://divinity.wikia.com/wiki/Crafting_(Divinity:_Original_Sin)
i keep a few armors and items with +1 crafting +1 in blacksmithing and put them on when i do my crafting and smithing. Helps to upgrade weapons and armors that i find that i like to keep and use. Also to make my own arrows and bombs. When im done i take them off. If you take a few chests and barrels of oil and water back to Cyceal you can drop them off, store your stuff and set up your crafting area.
I also keep items with +1 lockpicking and +1 pickpocketing for the same reason.....................................not to waste points when i level up and use them for other things.
