Steam Controller Not Working - Please Help!
I've just bought the game to play with my wife and I've been trying to get the game to recognize the steam controller for hours with no luck. And I can't find anywhere that gives a step by step on how to make it work. I've updated firmware. I've restarted my computer. I set the configuration to "gamepad" which is the recommended configuration. Then enter the game using big picture mode. Once in game, it acts like im just using a mouse and keyboard. If I go into the options and enable controller mode, the UI changes but my steam controller will not do anything. It just freezes and i have to control alt delete out of the game.

If there is a kind stranger out there who will help a poor lost soul, please. I beg of you. Walk me through how to get this game to recognize my steam controller.

When the game starts, is there a screen before the main menu that prompts you to press a key or controller button? That should set the initial input method.

Do you have another controller, as well? If the game is detecting the controller in its mouse and keyboard mode, it shouldn't give the option of changing the input if there isn't another controller.

In Steam Big picture mode, Settings, Controller, Base Configurations, did you set the Big Picture configuration to controller? I modified an XBox 360 profile, rather than use the default controller (to avoid an issue with the on screen keyboard, though that was a few firmware and software updates ago).
If you change the Desktop Configuration to a controller, the game should recognize it as a controller even if you do not start it through Big Picture mode.

This is exactly what I needed! I didn't realize I needed to change the "desktop configuration" to gamepad. There should really be a disclaimer somewhere to do that. Once I did that, everything worked!

Thank you sir!

You shouldn't actually need the desktop configuration set to a controller if you are launching the game through Big Picture mode; when I set up my Steam controller, it wasn't possible to change the desktop configuration.
Well, it's working now, anyway, and this way it will work from a Steam shortcut (or even starting it from the executable, as long as the Steam client is running).

Hmm, I usually have several programs open outside of big picture mode, like Spotify, Chrome, etc. Maybe that is making the desktop configuration override the gamepad configuration when I enter games.

Now that I have desktop configuration changed to gamepad, it fixed the issue.
