Unison Attacks Not Working

I've played this game on Gamecube, and never had this problem. I unlocked U Attacks, got the gauge to full, pressed the button Z is mapped to on my Xbox 360 controller, and the enemy was staggered mid combo.... nothing. The animation for the start of the attack didn't play either.
I appreciate any suggestions <3
