How exactly does the technical/strike thing work
Aselia wiki isn't very clear on that aspect. I can sort of infer that I can only learn one arte from each technical/strike pair (so like, no Nurse and Heal at the same time), but is that a permanent choice? Also can I learn one skill from one side and another from another side (say, Healing Circle and Holy Lance)?

I think it depends on what items you have equipped to your character. You can also only learn artes from whatever side your character is on (T or S side) but you can forget them at any time, re-equip and try out the other side to see what you get.

And yes it is possible to learn skills from both sides. Its a good idea for Genis so he gets the Absolute ice spell (guaranteed hitstun and brilliant damage) and Indignation.

As for how it works for mages like Genis, "Technical" are large area of effect spells that hit multiple targets, while "Strike" are magic spells meant to be aimed at one target for big damage.

Oh and originally the Gamecube version had a glitch where you could learn and have artes from both sides which was removed from the PS2 version onward.

You got Gems which you can use on a Character.
These Gems give you Skills which you can combine to get Better Skills.
Each Skill got a T or S Marker or whatever.
If you have more T Skills than S Skills, your Character gets the T Artes.
If you have more S Skills than T Skills, your Character gets the S Artes.
When you learned a Skill from T side, but want it from S side, you first have to change your Gems/Skills to S, then unlearn it and go into Battle again, and use the First Arte of the Arte you want to learn! (Demon fang -> Double Demon Fang / Fierce Demon Fang)
So: its not Permanent!
You can also learn an Arte from one side and another Arte from the other side, BUT it has to be from another Arte-Tree. So you cant have Double Demon Fang (T) and Demonic Circle(S), because Demonic Circle is a S Type! You now can only learn Demonic Chaos(T).
BUT you can have Demonic Chaos(T) AND Twin Tiger Blade(S).
because Demonic Chaos comes from the Demon-Blade-Tree and Twin Tiger Blade comes from the Tiger-Blade-Tree.
Hope you understand now :)

Not gonna lie... I've played through this game multiple times and never really figured out what that bar meant.

You can mix and match attacks from different trees, but you can only fully commit to one set of attacks at a time for any one group. So, say, Raine cannot learn Ray and Holy Lance at the same time, because they both stem from Photon, but she can learn Permaguard (Single Target Defense boost) and Acuteness (Party-Wide Attack boost) simultaneously because they build off of different spells, so you could delete Field Barrier and learn Permaguard in its place while keeping Acuteness.

also, if you dont want to bother with the gems, you can find two rings, the S-Ring and the T-Ring. if you have equipped the T-Ring it "overwrites" the number of gems and forces the charakter to go towards technical side. vice versa with the S-Ring. but since that is a accesoire slot thats wasted normaly, it only makes sense when you really want to have one specific spell from another side.
