Is there a patch to change Genis and Raine's names back to their Japanese originals?
Since I plan on planning with JP voices and all. It'd be pretty distracting to hear "Refill" and read "Raine".

Not that I know of,

And it won't be distracting to hear any other Japanese word but read it in English? You'll be perfectly fine.

So are words. Like "what" being "Nani" or "Idiot" being "baka" so if you can put up with those there's no reason you shouldn't be able to put up with the names as if they were just another Japanese word.

But localizing names is inexcusable. We need a patch to fix this.

No, it's excusable in this case because Refill is a dumb name and Raine is better : )
There won't be a patch. Relax and enjoy it as is.

It is an incorrect name, therefore Raine is objectively worse.

There needs to be a patch to fix a clear translation error.

Names have been changed in japanese RPGs since forever. "Refill" is a dumb name in English and Namco officially changed it for the US. Raine is better. It's not a translation error and it'll never, ever be patched. Just enjoy the game.

Translating proper nouns is always incorrect. A patch is required.

Names were changed for stylistic reasons. They weren't "translated," kiddo. They wanted Genis's name to be Genis, so that's what they did. They probably thought naming someone after an actual word (as Genis's name in Japanese ToS is "Genius") would be strange. It's not strange in Japanese because that's not a word in Japanese, but it has meaning in English. It's the same reason why some things in English stories use names from other languages. It's the reason why we use phrases from Latin.

Genis's name being Genius in Japanese adds backstory and double meaning to his name for the Japanese. In America, he's Genis because being Genius would simply be tacky. There's no double meaning behind that. There's no trivia. It's simply Genius because he's smart and that's it. So they changed it to Genis. They probably thought similarly in Raine's case as well. It doesn't take a lot of thought to realize or to understand these processes in a game's development and localization. I've never made a game in my life and I can still infer and understand these things. You should be able to, too. The names were changed for aesthetic reasons; if for some extremely strange reason you just can't deal with that, then don't use the JP voice pack. If you do decide to use it, then use it knowing that some names are replaced and were replaced for valid artistic reasons and you have no permission to ♥♥♥♥♥ about it. Alright, kiddo?

There is no valid reason to ever change a name, kiddo.

I wish they had changed Richter Abend's first name.
