Conversation choices

I was wondering, do conversation choices matter one way or another? For example I can choose to go with Colette to temple or not, at least conversation wise.

In a way there is some way it matters. Mostly towards the end of the game though. Near the end of the game you get a choice to go outside with 1 of 3 characters (and I believe it is the top 3 who like you.) iirc.

Conversation choices affect your affinity towards that character. If you make a decision that the character like, it raises the affinity and vice versa. Different affinity changes certain scenes in the game...

Basically this, The only major change is that one character can be replaced by another late in the game. But even then that is a matter of preference usually.

So what happens if I refuse to go with Colette to the temple? Am I going to end up going with her anyways, and only the affection stats take hit?

In that instance, yes.

Colette actually starts with a significant affinity advantage- she starts at like 50 when everyone else starts at 0- so you may need to actively knock her down if you want a different character, particularly a later one, in your top slots. You can transfer your affinity values across playthroughs for cheap, too, so you can "work toward" other characters while ultimately picking your one.

Colette is excruciatingly annoying so yeah, I'll do whatever it takes to change affinity.

Yes. It affects dialogue and a small but noteworthy plot element later on. Without spoiling a lot, the game is set up to use these choices to guide Lloyd towards a particular best friend/lover from his team. Your responses affect how much the teammates like lloyd, and will change certain dialogue, small scenes, and some larger late game dialogue. For the first play through, it's probably fine to just answer what you like and see who/what you end up with. You'll most likely enjoy the game enough to give it multiple play throughs and then you can change what happens.
