Enable Japanese voiced skits with English events (How-to guide)
Hi all,

I am cross-posting this just so it can be found more easily in future.

Those of use who are used to voiced skits in Tales games might struggle to endure Symphonia’s 300-strong catalogue of these endearing party chats. You can of course switch to Japanese, but the English voice acting is generally pretty good, and is surely an important part of the nostalgia for plenty of players.

When I played two years ago there I think there was a brief guide on how to get JP voiced skits while maintaining English for events. Since then, I have seen unanswered comments on Youtube videos and cannot track down any record of the file names. It is a very intuitive process!

Skit audio will not play unless you select Japanese in the settings menu. So the solution is to replace the Japanese event and battle voice files with the English ones.

You can simply copy all 20 of the files in the Win directory into 'Voice_JP'. In case something breaks, backup your 'Voice_JP' folder.

If you want to mix and match, or for any other reason know what the files do, you can copy over only what is necessary:

1. Copy over the files starting with 'SCE' from the Win folder of your installation into the 'Voice_JP' folder. They start with SCE_001_009 and end with SCE_121_132.

SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\Tales of Symphonia\P12E\Data\TOS_Server\Rawdata\WIN

to

SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\Tales of Symphonia\P12E\Data\TOS_Server\Rawdata\WIN\Voice_JP

This replaces the event voices.

2. Do the same with BTLSTR and BTLVOICE. This will replace combat and some non-combat dialogue, including tech names/incantations and post-battle chats.

3. As above, set audio to Japanese in-game.

Finally, if you want to extract audio from the game, say for getting the Indignation chant on a soundboard, you can download Somnides' AWB unpacker, drag BTLSTR/BTLVOICE onto AWBunpacker.exe, and then rename the extracted files from .bin to .adx for playback (I used VLC).

Happy playing! And if anyone digs up older posts detailing how to do this, please post them here - I'm pretty curious about why they are less accessible now.
