I'm amazed graces is winning, Everyone always forgets about that game and it EASILY has the best combat.

the community used to ♥♥♥♥ on graces for no reason, it was the under dog now its finally being appreciated. It has the best combat system for tales, no exception.

I don't think many people hated on the game for it's combat, more it's story.

Vesperia has the best combat with a decently high skill ceiling and a lot of room for player expression due to how combo-ing works. I love the shared Overlimit and the free form combos it allows. Fatal Strikes are also tons of fun, and make Minimum Damage actually viable (outside of boss battles anyway).

However no Tales game, and very few games in general, are as flashy and satisfying as Graces, and the Blast Calibers are the best Mystic Artes in the whole series. Being able to weave them into your combos anytime you get to 25/50/75 hit combos was an amazing feature too. It all gets even more fun when you can weave your Accel Gauge into combos, which opens up a ton of new possibilities. It's just a shame there's so much needless convolution within the game's many systems.

Hearts R is a total blast as well, combining the best elements of Vesperia, Graces and Xillia and adding really fun systems like pressing Guard to stop an enemy breaking out of your combo and the Dragon-Ball-like teleport mechanic (I completely forget its actual name). It's just a shame the game is stuck on the Vita because actually pulling off the systems doesn't always feel as satisfying as it should due to stiff/limited animations and kind of underwhelming Mystic Artes.

Both Vesperia and Graces have the issue of taking too long to really get going. It's close, but for me I have to go with Vesperia. Everything else pales in comparison to Vesperia, Graces and Hearts R in my opinion.

I can agree with about all of that, but I feel like Abyss deserves at least an honorable mention in that list.

It pioneered Free Run, which that and it's future derivatives, makes going back and playing Symphonia and any earlier games a bit of a chore at first until you reacclimate.

It was a bit early on, and it does seem like they had a bit of balancing issues. Free Running in Abyss made some fights too easy because you were so fast, and with a little bit of forehand knowledge, almost no enemy magic or skill was a threat to whoever you were controlling.

Still can't be understated how important it was to the rest of the series going forward.
