My fight with Abyssion glitched (?) and I basically beat him with one unison attack??

So I've recently gotten the itch to play Symphonia again and since I wanted to go for a challenge I decided to go for a non-cheese, LVL 70 Abyssion fight on hard.

It's been absolutely brutal even with Colosseum weapons/titles/concentrate/elemental immunity/loaded out items and has really pushed me to get better at things like switching b/w characters, trying out different accessories, team combos etc. Been rolling with Kratos, Lloyd, Genis and Raine and I can pretty consistently get him to around 100K health until he starts doing meteor storm and indignation judgement and then I run out of life bottles and I'm dead.

In my last attempt I was really early in the fight - I hit Abyssion's first overlimit threshold and did a unison attack that was lloyd's demonic chaos, genis' meteor storm and kratos' hurricane thrust (raine was dead at this point) and somehow that nuked Abyssion of what was most likely 150k+ of his health ?

I was so confused when I heard the death sound and the victory screen come up - at first I thought maybe the fight took longer than I thought and I had a god-like run but according to my inventory I literally only used one life bottle for the entire fight. I double checked my difficult settings and was able to confirm that I was on hard.

On the one hand I was happy I beat him but on the other hand that was totally not legit so I made sure to keep my pre-fight save so I continuing to try and beat him on hard and prepare for niflheim on another save.

I've tried repeating the situation but so far I have not been able to recreate what happened. Wondering if this has happened to anyone else or if this is a known bug or something?

Never happened to me. That's weird af -- Definitely a glitch xD

Also props to you for using Genis in that fight... He can hit hard, but my god is he squishy. I don't use him very often on hard and never use him on mania. Good luck on the actual Abyssion fight :)

Yea in all my playthroughs this has never happened to me before. Only thing I can think of is the unison attack camera is kinda weird/janky and maybe something about the angle + meteor storm knockback caused this??

I feel like I really need Genis cause absolute/atlas/thunder arrow etc. are the only consistent ways to put him in hit stun and get some juicy combo extensions. I equip him with the Star set for the fire immunity and if I can keep Abyssion aggro'd on lloyd or kratos he can live for a while. What's your team typically?

And also, I'm assuming getting through Niflheim is going to be a lot harder than this fight? My other save I think I decided I'm going to build up my devils arm dmg before I start going for the seraphim fight

Is Colette in your party? There is a cheese with her poison pow hammer you might have used by accident, it's a super low chance to pop the poison hammer, but if it does, it chunks any enemies health for 1.6% per second, effectively taking 1 minute to kill any boss in the game.

Kratos, Lloyd, Genis and Raine were in my party. Colette was definitely not in the fight.

I mean, that's fair. My usual team comp. depends on who I'm playing as, but usually it's Presea, Colette, Raine, then either Lloyd or Zelos/Kratos depending on who I'm playing as. Sometimes I switch Colette out, but her holy song buff helps a lot. My problem with Genis is the same as my problem with Raine where sometimes their AI is just horrible and even when you have your strat set up, they'll still just go run up to Abyssion (or any boss for that matter xD) and see how many hits they can take or cast right in front of them. Doesn't happen as often on this version as it did on gamecube, but still annoying nevertheless. lol Sucks tho cuz I prefer prism stars as my unison - Colette is my replacement cuz she also lets you use gospel. Plus, I switch characters in the middle of the fight if needed, and the stun from torrential para ball can be so stupid xD

Niflheim I'm working on right now, but yeah. It'll be harder. Hell knight is easy - You just put darkness reduction on everyone and make Raine immune to it. Honestly, Raine could solo it no problem. But yeah, Yuan, Mithos and Kratos will be an interesting battle. Each of them on their own can be annoying bosses, so proobaabbllyy not an easy fight. Fun one though :P

Ahh interesting I never really understood Holy Song and didn't know about para ball hit stun!

I was finally able to get a legit W with Lloyd, Kratos, Genis and Raine. I mainly credit the win to re-working my elemental immunities (Raine with that fire absorb and lightning immunity!!), controlling Raine/Genis to maintain distance, and resurrecting/gel spamming as much as I could to conserve life bottles, Was able to keep everyone alive at the end too. That was a crazy hard fight but glad I got the win but now to move on to Niflheim! Thanks for the tips!

The hero trio at the end of Niflheim would be a lot harder if they didn't mess up Kratos's stats for it; he's super weak for no reason. All three of their movesets are also nerfed; no Shining Bind from anyone (story reasons?), no Retribution or Time Stop bs from Mithos, and Yuan won't use either of his new PS2 techs. Just watch out for Mithos's Indignation Judgment and stack those light resistances to withstand his Prism Sword spam while you hold off the other two -- I hope you still have the beam shield and didn't miss the gold armor for Kratos/Zelos. If you play your cards right I think you can make Kratos/Zelos and Raine completely immune to light (stun charms are your friend). If you're on mania mode with no all-divides then you pretty much need all that plus constant Revitalizes from Raine, but hard mode should be a tad more lenient.

Grats on your Abyssion win and gl on Niflheim!!! Elemental immunities are life savers for these bosses xD

Wondering if perhaps the "bugged" fight you had was some kind of issue where your unison attack messed with angle and registration on Abyssion, so he somehow ate every single meteor in the spell. Considering Meteor Storm is still one of the most damaging spells despite only 1/3 or so meteors connecting, taking all of the hits might be a burst in damage that explains it.

Came back to this after a break and was able to get it! Yup I can confirm that the hero trio was unfortunately pretty underwhelming on Hard. Beat them with Lloyd Kratos and Raine first try without too much trouble. I found the Grand Cardinal Trio to be much more of a challenge than them.

And this ends my challenge run with Symphonia for now. It's always so fun revisiting this game. I think the battle system, while janky and dated, is still pretty engaging and it's been fun learning to master it for these bosses.

Yeah, I have only done those fights once, but Shadow Magnius felt like he hits harder than all the three heroes combined. That was definitely the hardest fight for me as well.
