There is a combo you can do where you hit an enemy in the air and slash down while in the air followed by an arte. To be honest I'm not sure if it registers three separate directions because I tend to mash A and move the circle stick around without knowing exactly what direction made the combo work (but I can still pull it off, if that makes sense...)
Right up down tiger blade
Then there's the 'no Direction's hit (just hit A)
A, right A, down A, demon fang
Maybe try looking at each stage to make sure there's a different animation for each direction. It is very easy to accidentally hit 'right A' instead of just normal A and there is a difference. It's easy because you're usually closing in on an enemy to hit it and naturally do a right-A.
This is especially noticeable for Colette because normal A is the only way to do a quick close attack otherwise she gets stunned trying to do a long animation but I digress...
Anyway good luck.
