Mail tells jokes, or story elements, where as a fire scroll (and cursed ones) deter using scrolls randomly.
EDIT: ALSO I FORGOT! It's for player distinguishability earlier in the run.
Oh, I know how to, however before you do, keep in mind some benefits of keeping your curse; such as it being free of mana cost, and having lesser, but permanent benefits, at the cost of hunger.
In the Mystic library, once you get to level 16 (The Ruins, or the blue area, you should see "YOu hear a mystic dronning in the distance."), you will need teleportation, or levitation. (Vampire starts with levitation.)
Find a platform seperated by a one-tile gap and two gates, and two levers at the back. Get into it (digging, or use the puzzle method), and use the portal. The spellbook will be in one of the backmost chests.
After using it, your curse will lift, will be stronger, but will now cost mana to use.
Aye, if you've got other questions, ask em. I'll be here to answer at some point.
You can set off traps with dropped items.
You can activate pressure plates (less so traps, some open doors)
And lastly you can level your appraise by identifying them :P
I guess they may have had an idea to allow you to create scrolls with them. Maybe we'll see that in Barony 2
