But If I got the main idea... Auctions with shares, which you can buy, are conducted separately from The Detective. I mean that The Detective says you when The Bad Guy are going to obtain the shares somehow. Usually in such quests you cannot obtain shares, you can only prevent The Bad Guy to obtain shares. Therefore the Detective has no connection with auctions.
The real auctions are story (and maybe timer) driven. From time to time you'll be invited to take a part in such an auction. That will be a quest, not just a notifications like for auction about farm, coal mine, whatever else.
