Bandits and Turrets
Ok, I'm seriously struggeling with the bandit encounters on normal difficulty and I'm wondering why their toughness just went sky-high very quickly. Is this a problem with the game balance, or are they tied to the story so I have simply progressed too quickly without getting proper gear along the way? Right now the only way I'm able to make any progress seems to be to save before leaving town and if I encounter bandits just reload and try another route, would much rather spending money on getting more track rights than paying the bandits every time I pass...

Also I've just upgraded my caboose from 2 to 4 crew, but it seems the only crew I can find currently are related to turrets, but I don't have any and I've not found any turrent or gatlin guns for sale so far, so what am I missing?

Why everyone is blaming game balance after encountering problems? Game balance is ok, at least in this aspect. It's your fault, since you've ignored development and arming of your crew.

You should hire guards as soon as possible, hire better guards when available and buy best weapons for everyone. Also it's good to stockpile every medicine and explosive until you are armed to the teeth (10-20 of each should be enough). Turrets are only necessary for stuck bandits bug and you can do well without them (although shooting natives with rear-mounted gatling is quite entertaining).

Playing on hard and never had problems with bandits and natives, but I've done all the above to be prepared.

Tip - focus on city hall contracts, buy best locomotive possible (General at least, available after ~1 year, preferably Sierra), use cargo car and caboose only.

BTW - what is your campaign date? You should have at least one year until bandits form larger gangs?

I entcouter almost the same and was not bad in the early acces version but now. yes i am shocked to focus now is ongoing to contract i hate timers.

I find it pity you are maybe right tactics but i loved to have a big train. My prevous saved game is broken i like a train with every type of wagon, mortar, caboose ,hosbital, and more.

you were right with good crew i have 4, i came costly price, yeah i know it was bad choice and tactics to do no citycontracts and have slow train, choose slow train, to save coal, all bad choices.
crew is almost good, restart, out of money loc and 2 wagons had to much miles. Very pitty aspect, repairing you train is almost not worth/as uprgrading to. Because you must my more often a new one. save emergency money for that, is a lot 5000 loc, 2500 goodwagon and more.

I'm not directly targeting the game balance, I'm trying to figure out why the difficulty went up from my first few (relativly) easy encounters to now where I get wiped out by 14 bandits throwing lots of explosives every encounter. I'm suspecting I've progressed something too fast which have caused the difficulty to be upped, but I can't figure out if it's my wealth or the story I need to do differently. If it's upped because of passing time then the difficulty do need adjustments I think.

Anyway. I'm in december 1861, have just saved my sister and hired the detective. Train is the General with 2 medium carriages (changing them between cargo/pas as I need), and having the 4-crew caboose. Just having 2 crew atm though as the only people for hire I seem to encounter are either rubbish or the ones with turret abilities.

personally i would train turret member and hire them. can shoot, there skills crew, end game you want high skilled turret , gaitlingguns are fast empty and you need good turretskill to shoot fast again/reload fast.

You haven't progressed too fast, just ignored defences. The problem is that encounter difficulty goes up without warning and you should buy weapons and crew even if it doesn't seem necessary. Later the problem is that encounter difficulty stays and your crack crew will be killing them without much effort. Sometimes it's even better to pay bandits than to waste time for slaughtering them.

As for guards - hire even those rubbish. Later you can swap them for better crewmenbers (and keep ther equipment). Invest in guns - those starting guns are quite weak and even in 1861 you should be able to buy decent guns (in 1862 you should be able to buy 14 damage revolvers and repeating rifle).

Thank you for advice. I did buy new rifles for my current 2 crew some time ago (before I started being run over by the bandits). Sharps 1855, seems to have good damage but bad rate of fire, I have checked around a bit since (not every dealer though) to look for something better, but not much luck so far.

Sounds like some adjustments to the difficulty might be needed though, make it ramp up slower, but ending up tougher than currently?

Absolutely. We are working with it now. First result should be available by next patch.

the first big fight 1962 2 gaitlings guns, extra 4 crew bandit leader 17 is not to kill, indead overpowered. The big diffrence with early access is they have way more hitpoints then your own people have and also the have more medic people. In the past bandits never healed. I am very shocked.
Not beter programmed they match the hitpoints of your own crew? Now i shoot, i died but they lived it is not fair.

Yes, both issues are bugs and all of them will be fixed by next update.

And it takes you two almost two years to fix it. Early Access at its finest. OK, I'm overexaggerating a bit, but the game was released a month ago and still no patch to fix any of the numerous bugs in game.

Thansk agian for the fast confirmation and feedback. You see i tried it a second time, cost agian 6 hours of playing not anyway near the easy fun from early access game of Dec 2016

So i must be friend for the quest Broche to bandits and not fight bandit, thats also a family reed task. more 20 less shares. early access was way more easy to understand.
