Gary Grigsby's War in the East

Gary Grigsby's War in the East

WitE 1 v WitE 2?
I'm wondering whether to get Gary Grigsby's War in the East 1, which is currently on sale on Steam, or Gary Grigsby's War in the East 2, which was released a few months ago and would be full price.

Is GGWitE 2 better than GGWitE 1?

I would go with WiTE1, nice discount and gives you a good game, follow up is still full price and adds some things, but not enough to warrant a follow up, ( its almost like they released this instead of the game they want to make atht actually uses the massive map you get but dont use ) and does not look at important things like everyone using the same fuel for land and air, which as a player you cant let the air war be run on auto as it burns out your fuel, so you have to micro manage it. Ai cheats by teleporting units each turn, ie movement points mean nothing, to form a new line.

I have a different viewpoint... I’ve got about 100 hours in both 1 and 2, so no expert, but I prefer the sequel.

The air war is vastly improved, and is also much easier to wrap your head around.

The map is all of Europe, so clearly they’re getting the system ready for either war in the west 2 or a massive war in Europe game.

If you can still get a physical copy of part 2, do it. The manual is beautiful.

You can print it off far cheaper than they will sell/ship it to you.

Yes, and the Middle East, and Iceland, most of the map is unused however.

Doesn't matter to me. This game had my interest. Now it has my attention. I think they should instead add these seperate theatres as expansions and so you choose the war and scope of conflict you want to fight.

Held my attention for a weekend, ( game already has all the theatres in play as boxes you hold garrisons in that move up or down the historical outcomes) things like all nations land sea and air units all using the same single fuel, wagons being more efficient means of supply than trucks, and not at historical rates of fuel/fodder consumption, helped me lose interest.

aye, agree, the failure to distinguish between the various types of fuel is a serious failure in the game design :steamsad:

i'd be interested in getting to know the difference beteween the games as well since i ve been playing WITE1.

Has any of you compared the detailed combat algorithms between the two games?
Has this improved?

It's fun looking at combat taking place. However, in wite1 I find it very weird at times, i.e. the low efficiency of tanks vs tanks or infy when there are hundreds of them involved and the negligable results of air support.

For those who owned the first one, should get a discount buying the second one though. I am not paying that much again.

Beside the game if lack of many things and poor setup, even for the next one. Seriously they are smoking cracks trying to get that much from us.

WITE2 is better in every aspect.
The air war is fantastic. Don't be scared by the weird UI of it, it is really much better. Especially the ability to support your ground forces.
Another thing I like more is the weather. It's not the three big weather zones, but way more variety, which makes the rain and mud period less of a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ like it was in WITE1 since you still have a few areas where there is better weather.
In general the larger scope of the map allows for more interesting strategies. I especially noticed this in the Road to Leningrad scenario, which is far more fun in WITE2 than 1.
The AI also became better. Of course, the Soviet AI still tries to establish a defensive frontline ASAP, but you also have some counterattacks in the South - which is what historically happened. Can't remember that it happened in the first game.

So imagine WITE2 just to be a better and more in depth version of WITE 1. If you are up for that, go buy it. And people shouldn't complain about the prize. This game will keep you busy for years.

And as soon as War In The East 2 is available to buy on steam. I will buy a copy without hesitation.

I don't understand why all of their other games are automatically sold on steam. But not this game.

I think they are losing money. But it's their company so I'll wait.
WITW only got released on Steam three years after the initial release. And WITE seven years after the initial release.

And I mean you get the Steam key eventually when the game gets on Steam if you buy it on Matrix, so I don't get the issue people have.... Do people really don't play a game just because it isn't on Steam? lol

Indeed that's the case. E.g. I ve been waiting for quite some time for Ultimate Admiral Dreadnoughts to be released on Steam but wouldn t want to buy this from the devs website.

It can be quite a hassle having to take the time to fumble around reinstalling games on new PCs, searching for codes etc.

Furthermore, especially with smaller developers, some don't update their games to new tech requirements so that these might not work on newer PCs.
With Steam the player can be relatively sure that this isn't so: so far I ve only experienced with one game that it wasnt't updated and therefore was removed as unplayable.
