Other Steam games like this - any suggestions?
The best platformer I've ever played. What do I love bout this game - it's easy enough for relaxed gameplay. You can start on the "Dream" difficulty - then NewGame+ (once or several times) on Normal or Nightmare. And it's not pushing you into "really challenging battles", even with bosses. I prefer to have challenges IRL, and play games to relax and distract myself from RL - not to challenge even more. I've tried some other metroidvania/castlevania-likes and RPG's on Steam. but most of them are either too difficult or not really developed and interesting. So, any suggestions?

well, the best ones are La-Mulana 2 and Environmental Station Alpha

Of course, Hollow Knight is incredible, too.

Unfortunately, La-Mulana 2 doesn't run in Linux - even with Steam Play. Another two don't have Easy mode, and actually aren't really easy - at least in the beginning.

I overlooked that you were looking for easier games.

Try Xeodrifter

The game is a little low on the metroidvania aspect. It is stage-based, but you can come back to them with new abilities to find new items and secrets.
Story and dialogues are pretty fun.
I only played hard mode and it wasn't challenging, but there are easy and normal modes too.

I have no idea if it runs on Linux with Steam Play.

Jeeesus that looks about as old as something from the mid 2000s.

I actually like how it looks, might pick it up on sale. Reminds me a lot of Kirbys great cave offensive

Bloodstained is coming out soon, so you may want to try that one out.

Could also get Curse of the Moon in the meantime.

You could, but there are some noticeable differences.

Timespinner is Symphony of the Night. Bloodstained is Symphony of the Night 2. Curse of the Moon is earlier Castlevanias, before SoTN shook everything up.

If I had to recommend a game with the acronym CotM, it would be CIRCLE of the Moon, a Castlevania game for the GBA, but unless you have an old system or an emulator, you're out of luck.

Same reason I didn't recommend SoTN, sadly. No Steam port that I know of. We recently got a "Castlevania collection", so I'm hoping for a part 2 that has games like CotM, HoD, DoS, AoS, PoR, and so on. THOSE are the ones that were the front of the pack when they were current (alongside the Metroid games), and everyone else has just been trying to fill the void they left when those two series stopped making games in that format.

I think finding a good metroidvania like this one is hard (I've been looking and bought many games I'm not in love with). For me, what makes this game really stand out is the leveling up system. I can load this and just kind of drift around and level (and make progress) until I'm ready to fight a boss. Most metroidvanias do not have a leveling up system.

Because of this, I recommend anything by the guy who made Symphony of the Night (get your hands on that game if you can!). I haven't tried his newest game "Bloodstained" yet, but my guess is it will be just right.

Just get bloodstained then. It's pretty good.

S&S is technically a metroidvania but it is a lot more akin to Dark Souls in 2D just i case you're not into that.

Dark Souls is a 3D metroidvania game so yeah, salt and sanctuary would also qualify, though it is harder than any game mentioned above except la mulana 2
