And while the gameplay is way more functional than Unity, I would take Unity over this any day of the week. Which is literally what I've done ever since I got Syndicate. It inspired me to get back into the series after being displeased with it since the ending of ACIII, so I'll give it that. But progressing further feels more of a chore than an actual AC experience.
I say Unity over Syndicate because of several things:
1. Parkour is way better. Why would they remove side ejects in Syndicate? This felt faster, more efficient, and more rewarding to do than this grappling hook business.
2. The combat was also way better. It had that classic AC feel, and while it did get janky at times, at least you had more freedom of movement, more weapons, and flashier kill animations. Not that that matters since I stealth through Unity almost 100% which brings me to another point.
3. Stealth felt better with a crouch button you can hold and release at will, all the while keeping your hood on, which is a big damn deal in this series. Why is it even an option in Syndicate? Wall hugging felt cool to do, enemy placement and environments also made for spicy situations where as Syndicate had uninteresting enemy placement and environments for missions and side missions to take place in.
4. The story had weight to it. Jacob and Evie seem to win too easily. There's maybe ONE scene where Evie is setback by a Templar really giving her a run for her money, but that's it. They seem too invincible. Arno was wrought with moral choices and rebelled against the Brotherhood for what he felt was right. Although he could have been punished more for his transgressions, and the ending felt rushed, he at least felt like he was having a hard time taking on his responsibilities.
5. Missions actually got harder throughout the game in Unity. The mission locations got bigger and the enemy count did as well, and targets also got harder to kill. In Syndicate it felt like there was no change near the end. You do this and that in a tiny space and be done with it. The only time the mission location felt large was when you had to do STUPID TAILING MISSIONS, which you shouldn't have to do near the end of the game. It destroys the pace and tension built leading up to it. Which Syndicate lacks.
Syndicate is still a good game, but it pales in comparison to Unity for me. It makes it hard for me to finish the last two sequences because on one hand I was liking it until I saw how much time even the main missions were wasting and just wanna stop playing it, but I'm also so far into it that I might as well finish it even though it feels like a chore at this point.
Syndicates map has many different places like parks, river ports, bridges, Railway stations, big city massive roads and buildings. And and also rural villages. Every places looks different than others.
Only downside of Syndicate is the game is too easy. Once you get the pistol and knife upgraded to the max. The game became just walk in the park. I can carry 33 knifes. I just stealth kill everyone from above, every mission.
You have a point, but having the buildings closer together in Unity made it more fun to parkour around.
And yeah Syndicate is too easy game and story wise. I never felt like anything was at stake in the story and Im on the final chapter.
Someone please convince me it's worth doing the last few missions and that they're not slow burning ones like tailing and carriage driving garbage.
Found both to be very missable 6/10 cookie-cutter irrelevant filler editions. AC 2, 4, 1 and even 3 are a higher level.
In both, the main plot is sub-par and lacking, while also not really doing anything regarding the 'present time' story which hangs like a plot-sword of Damocles, with me waiting for when the hell it's gonna drop and things gets real. AC3, 4 (+ Rogue), Unity and Syndicate have passed with no progress there yet still teasing it. This is Shenmue levels of waiting with no payoff.
After many Syndicate missions I either thought "what was the point of that? / Is that it?" because it involved doing barely anything, or "that wasn't very assassin-y" because you were going through London with a gatling gun, blowing everything up or riding like a maniac. Long gone are the days of AC 1's less-is-more, slow build. Suspension of disbelief is really tested regarding NPCs too, especially with your new Bat-Launcher.
With both games the city is pretty lacklustre. Not comparable to the tonnes of places in AC 2 I remember reading all about. In Unity it's just Notre Dame, in Syndicate there's Big Ben and the Palace. That's it really.
I'm British and preferred Unity of the two. At least with Unity the missions (IIRC) had a bit more to them and, if you know your French Revolution history and key figures, is another great AC for history buffs as you meet people and take part in major events, while Syndicate more shoe-horns in famous British names to all be in the same place at the same time giving you missions, during a time period where nothing in particular happened.
Apparently Origins and Odyssey is a real change in direction, and evidently it needs it, so I hope it's a good change.
If Unity and Syndicate are your first 2 AC games though, then you'll enjoy it more as it's still fresh.
Small gameplay changes? Syndicate feels as much like GTA as it does an AC game. You get a 6 shooter, carry 18 bullets and 20 throwing knives. The game can be played like a shooter. Plus you have the zipline. It's very different from Unity.
i carried 33 throwing knives ( for Eve). And 30 bullets. There are skill tree upgrades for Eve to carry up to 30 knives and also wearing a certain outfit adds extra bullets and knives slots.
I spent more time in unity because is challenging about 30 hours+ than syndicate 6 hours with all teritorry and main story complete
and main story maybe bad but the dlc dead king is very good storyline with broken arno come back to his feet as a man
the parkour is much more better in unity because syndicate has more wide and larger dimension world so the devs give player rope launcher is kind of like shortcut so not much action parkour
I prefer the unity cosmetic even there is microtransactions and many choice of legacy outfit
unfortunately I never play co-op privately but is sometime solo is what makes challenging
the gadget I use is overpower phantom blade disguise smoke bomb and cherry bomb is very essential but the item is sparse than syndicate so upgrading your base (cafe theatre is must have)
I learn french because of unity like good old ac2 italian
there is one thing more annoy me tail mission
