Also wanted to get a discussion going on what faction most people align themselves with, so, Templar or Assassin?
I would like something like that as well.
However Ubisoft has burnt most avenues that they could take in order to make a high budget and highly successful Templar POV game. The writing has been idiotic and has managed to paint them as worse than demons (or nazis). Hitler? Templars did it. Stalin? Same.
You do have likeable Ts (Haytham, Shay, Monro, Gist, etc) but most are confined to a specific time period and it was in a time where Templars did not wear gestapo uniforms, patrolled the streets of london and carried huge crosses (instead of swastikas) in their arms or where the Nazis themselves. Everything bad has been, in a spectacularly lazy fashion, been attributed to Templars.
A not so bad approach (maybe the only one without creating copies of characters) would be to have a main character that calls out the hypocrisy of Assassins - say, something that explores this avenue:
"free will my a**: they kill without much thought for redemption, thereby erasing everything that person could be and act like judge and jury in a secretive trial - at best - which always dictates the death penalty. They are nothing but glorified murderers whose great wisdom can be found in the preposterous motto of "nothing is true, everything is permitted". They accuse the Templars of wanting to decide and control people's lives while denying them a choice, but they do just the same - only they are stupid enough (arrogant, etc) not to see it/admit it. "
That could have some gameplay reprecussions (afterall: the fun of it is killing people, not tailing them and arresting them) if not done correctly and, furthermore (and perhaps most importantly), one needs to understand that these games have to appeal to a huge audience which is made up of kids and overall idiots whose response to Rogue was: "WTF?!!!! Dis are the bad guys!".
The conflict of democracy versus enlightened dictatorship is one that could be a source of some great lore - but given the constraints mentioned, you will likely not see it playing out as you, perhaps, woul have liked to see.
