It's the closest you can get to truly owning a digital version of the game: even if GOG went under one day, as long as you have that installer downloaded and stored somewhere, you can play the game at any time.

I don't think you understand. I wasn't just talking about this game. What you're talking about very rarely works, Cross Code is a rare exception. Meanwhile, ALL games on GOG (to my knowledge) have that capability. So no, it's not the same on Steam. Not even close.
