Why isn't this more popular?
It's super solid from what I've played - controls are tight and combat is super fun. The pixel art is really good too. This seems like the kind of game that would draw a lot of attention, yet it seems somewhat unknown... Weird.

I'm really suprised I didnt hear of this game sooner. It just popped up on my steam list and I kinda liked the art style and noticed it had a demo. Played the demo, boom, threw it on my wish list pretty high. I probably would have bought it but I dislike buying early access games since you cant be sure they will be finished and I also prefer a full game experiance.

I still have to say I was very impressed by the demo. The jumping mechanic was a bit awkward since your dealing with 2d graphics but it just felt really good. I'll do what I can with some forum posts but if you want to get some attention try contacting the extra credits people, they might be willing to include this game in one of their 'games you might not have tried' vids, I've found some gold there before.

I was able to complete the added story without starting a new save. I just tend to start a new save every once in a while because I love the game and the story.
Lucky dude...
Yeah, I was one of the lucky ones.
It's exactly the opposite of what modern companies and publishers do. Spend all their money and time promoting and advertising rather than finishing, developing and polishing their damn games even if they are mediocre generic garbage. You really know when all they give a ♥♥♥♥ about is the money. Just look at Crapcom and what happened to Konami.

I think the real issue is the TIME at wich Crosscode released and started out...

I mean, just look at the indie gaming scene and marvel at how many games have the "retro" look, some peoples are sick to death of games being pixelly for one reason or another, most of thoses reasons being "we're targetting our crap through nostalgia glasses" when the game could've been played the exact same WITHOUT the pixels

after that it is true that the game DOES look RPG maker-ish from the static screenshots due to the art-style so peoples will almost immidiately assume its some sort of Zelda wannabe or a Final Fantasy tactics clone, they expect the game to be quite slow/turn based...

add to that the whole "early access" business going on and you've got a tri-fecta of distrust from the general public.

"I always have the theory, that CrossCode doesn't really have the "best first impression". That means it may not look quite as good as it feels when you actually play it. "

Yeah, it's unfortunately the case for your game. I usually can read a game really well now, know with a few seconds of video if it'll be fun to play, but i was actually surprised at how fun crosscode is when i started playing. I backed it on indigogo thinking "why not" but not totally sure if it would be a good investment. I just tried it today and I must say I'm really super impressed. Very very few games ever got the right "feel" of a SNES game and you guys did it, I felt like I was playing a lost cartdrige of an awesome RPG of that era! Loving it.

Nowadays, it's a freaking lottery to be successful as an indie.
Devs: please contact me if you re looking for some help to promote or be seen by press, might be able to help a tiny bit.

I'm waiting for it to come out of Early Access. I have a strict no-EA policy. (The other EA applies here too)

Checked the Steam Charts and found that the number of players is in the two-digit regions. That is a stark contrast to the actual quality of the game. As someone who backs projects like this one as a hobby, I think that CrossCode is the best one I played in years.

That being said, all indie devs have to fight with the lack of spotlight since the number of available games is vaster than the ocean. Isn´t there some kind of collaboration or platform where indie devs combine their efforts to get some attention to their games.
Or maybe just bluntly contact indie devs who were successful and ask them for advice?

Yeah there's a few events where indies with promising titles gather while press comes to write about what they see. Stuff like that or getting awards at large game conference like GDC helps word of mouth or to convince large publisher to work with you.

The problem with why or why not this game isn't "popular" on steam has to do with two things imho: The fact that it's an RPG and its early access. We get too many early access games that take FOREVER to get done (some on here are 3 years old and still not finished), so that may be a huge turnoff. Think about it, who wants to play an unfinshed rpg when they can just wait or buy one that is instead?

That's what i'm thinking anyway.

for whomever whom read this, thanks.
1- early access from an AAA game and an indie is a whole different thing. Most indie developers do as a hobby, because they have to work, and when you finance you are directly helping them spend time on their project.

*this next topic might be biased because I just brought the game*
2- I believe the focus on the marketing is kinda off, rather than "not the best first impression". What fascinates in this game is the ambience, which comes whithin the beautiful world you created (pixel art and OST) and the way you interact with it (gameplay and story).
There's no screen shot of destructibles item, no freezing/blowing things, no trade picture nor the skill tree (I would include the menu but I believe it would be better in the next patch when the status will be included), on the steam page. And all these makes the game unbelievable good.
As I see, you are still too atached to the idea that "we miss games like Secret of Mana so here is something similar to it but with enhanced gameplay"but it's pretty bigger than that. It's not 16-bit SNES-style graphics its PIXEL ART! It's not "butter-smooth physics, a fast-paced combat system, and engaging puzzle mechanics" it's a UNIQUE MECHANIC IN A DYNAMIC ENVIROMENT! But it's indeed all "served with a gripping sci-fi story."
Also, many early access games have an Arcade Mode (or a pretty big sandbox) that allows leaderboards and smaller unique runs that keep the people hooked. The focus here is thinking in replaybility with what the gameplay already offer, so people keep playing now and then after each update.
Last, but not least, I think there's too focus too much on Shizuka's story, even though (so far) we only see her on tutorial. Showing Emilie or Apollo would be much more significant as they have a deeper impact on Lea (from whom perspective the game takes place) to the point Shizuka doesn't needs to appear at all in the advertise.

3. The idea of only giving keys to streamers after the game is complete seems really wise.

4. Great game, the best action-RPG I played

Game looks amazing and I've been following it for a long time, but waiting for it to leave EA to buy it.

I know this might sound silly but, have you tried talking to another devs of other released indie games? I often get this vibe that indie devs are more open to exchange knowledge than AAA devs and maybe you get to undestand a little more about the ins and outs of self publishing a game.

I´m pretty sure if you ask people like Remigiusz Michalski from Harvester Games (The Cat Lady) or Joe Mirabello from Terrible Posture Games (Tower of Guns) they could share some knowledge, giving some examples. Or ask some advice from the guys of Extra Credits, that seems like a worthy shot c:

Guess its up to us to spread around, maybe find certain people to do remix cover for those games? I am intending to try give this game more recognition it deserves somehow.

Edit: Oh by the way, crossovers are also helpful to give this game some recognition. Suggesting for Lea to be in Super Smash Bros. in my opinion since she does have some good movesets that would be enough to be in it.

It does, we need the community to gather in order to make the game well known. Of course it doesnt have to be just Super Smash Bros. anyways. As mentioned earlier, you can always find other known people who do remixes on games. In my case, Gametal. He does Metal version for games and pretty well known, which helps gives attention to the fans of the game. There are alternative ways we can help.

Nothing wont be easy, but its possible if we can work together making it more known. Throwing out suggestions on what crossover will help.
