games like crosscode?
I can't remember a time when a game has had this much of a hold on me -- I can't stop playing. I don't know if it's due to the MMO-like gameplay or what, but I'm in love.

Are there any similar high quality, visually impressive games that remind you of Crosscode, or perhaps just great games in similar genres? I'm in need of a fix after I complete this one.

It reminds me of Falcom games like Ys and Trails in the Sky. I'm guessing you've played the first based on your profile pic but consider giving Trails a look too. It's got the same charm: fun dialogue, likable characters, good sidequests, well-developed world, etc.

I pity you.
Well, I pity myself.

To me Crosscode is in the same vein as Terranigma, if you maybe wanna check that out. Terranigma is the Capstone of the Soul-Blazer Trilogy, but the way it took all the slow parts of RPG's and made it second to the Action Gameplay was amazing. Crosscode will more likely be compared to different games, but when it comes to the same level of immersion into a 2-d topdown Action-RPG with unique Gameplay, I say check Terranigma.

To clarify, I pity us because I cannot recall another similar feeling game. Maybe that's just me.

If I remember correctly, developers (also) were looking on Alundra from SNES. But it is more about puzzles, not action

Ys games like Oath In Felghana, Origin and Seven for similar combat but they aren't as deep as Crosscode as far as RPG elements go. Still great games nevertheless.

I would also second Alundra, it's not nearly as action heavy but if you like the exploration and dungeon design of CC, you will definitely dig Alundra as well. It's one of my favorite ps1 games actually.

Ittle Dew gives me a similar feel with the puzzles, but combat is weak and it's a Zelda-like rather than a puzzle MMO style game.

I second Terranigma, excellent game.

Secret of Mana and some of the others in the Seiken Densetsu series have a bit of the same feel combatwise (charged skills), but are pretty light on puzzles.

thanks everyone. :) i'm going to try out terranigma first, followed by alundra.

i LOVE the Ys games, and i can see where the comparisons lie. more of a fan of the modern ones (seven, VIII) than the originals.

I grew up playing Snes games, so CrossCode was a wonderful find. Here's a quick list of games that I can think of having some relation from that time.
  • Terranigma - as others have mentioned, great game. Probably the most similar one I can think of to CrossCode. If you only bother with one, make it this one. Predecessors are okay, but Soul Blazer is particularly basic, even by snes standards. Consider playing them as a history lesson.
  • Chrono Trigger - beautiful game with multiple endings and good active turn-based combat. Available on Steam, but the original version is fine (and can be modded). Akira Toryama of DBZ fame was heavily involved in the art design.
  • Secret of Mana - nice looking game with action "turn based" combat. A bit broken since it had to be rushed after the Snes CD project flopped, but the music is wonderful, the story is nice and abusing magic spells can absolutely curb stomp enemies. Secret of Evermore has a very different premise and atmosphere, but is far more technically polished.
  • Various other RPGs if you're looking for story and visuals, provided you don't mind moving away from action-oriented gameplay. Breath of Fire 2 (with the retranslation mod), Final Fantasy 4 & 6. Actraiser is quite a unique blend - side-scroller action with top down God-mode as you get your naked cherub to direct people to rebuild the world.

Hyper Light Drifter, I knew I was forgetting something. That's a must play as well.

As far as similar to Crosscode, Secrets of Grindea is by far by far the closest you're going to find anywhere currently

Chrono Trigger

How has nobody mentioned Phantasy Star? The post Online games are the perfect comparison to this, if CrossCode was a 3D game. Action RPGs with sci-fi settings. You can play the original PSO or Universe on private servers, Zero on the DS, and Online 2 on the NA server for PC or Xbox One.

That game is awful. There's no dialogue meaning there's no story and it looks like it was created using Mircosoft Paint. You just have robots beeping and booping at you and a confusing map to top it off. i love hard games but Hyper Light Drifter sucks, badly. It doesn't touch Crosscode in even one aspect.

I haven't found any 2D Action RPG on steam that's better than Crosscode. The only thing I can think of is playing Secret of Mana, Trials of Mana.. Ive never played Terranigma, but honestly don't think there is another game like Crosscode or even as good as Crosscode in this genre, here on Steam.

And it looks great.

Turned based combat is awful. It's the reason action RPGs exist.

Since we're throwing opinions out, I will say you are wrong. OMORI is a great game with turn based combat.
