How do you add items to your favorites in inventory menu?

When I open up inventory, and go to consumables, there are a bunch of boxes in the bottom left labeled Favorites. How do I add items to these favorite boxes, please?

I'm still early on, and only have a sandwich and some Green Leaf Tea. How do I add them, or any item, to the favorites boxes?

And then, once I get favorites in those boxes, how do I access them during gameplay to use them?

Ok, I figured out how to add items to the favorites boxes. But, what does this mean? I found out that I can access and use my consumables from the quick menu.

So, what does making an item a favorite actually do? It adds a star icon on it, but what use is this function, please?

Your favorites go at the top of the list in the quick menu. Once you have a few dozen different types of items, this can be helpful for finding the stuff you use a lot quickly.

Sooooo, how did you set an item to a favorite? This was the only useful google result when I searched for how to do so...

In the consumables tab of the inventory menu, press 'B' while mousing over any item to set or clear it as a favorite. I'm not 100% sure what the equivalent is for a gamepad, but there's a button hint for "Set Favorite" at the top of the UI that should tell you what it is if that's your setup.
