The code sequence itself is a meta-reference; most players from the Konami golden age era would at least have heard of it.

Though the final part has been tweaked IIRC to prevent copyright. To that end, I suggest you explore the exterior rooms where the entrances to the three dungeons are.

Okay, so I got the hint at the start and found the Konami code, but what the heck am I supposed to do with it? I've gone to the Royal Grove on the platform by the tree and have entered the code on my controller, fired shots to match the code, and a few other things. I feel like I'm missing something extremely obvious. Between "Behind the tree" and the code, I feel like I would've gotten it by now.

...Yeah, I did that too the first time. There's a path behind a tree to a hidden area, with an actual terminal you can enter the code at.
