This is a problem I've encountered with many, many modern games so I'd recmmend checking out one of the plenty emulation programs that basically turn your controller into an Xbox controller. It's not a big hassle once you have set it up. You could also just play the game with mouse and keyboard, which works perfectly fine for me and many others, but I guess that's a matter of taste.
In short, if you want your gamepad to work out of the box, you might as well refund. But sooner or later you'll be running into the same problem with another game, I'm pretty sure, so I would rather recommend just using one of those programs.
All games i ever played worked fine with my PS2 controller.
A refund it is, then...
Dramatic much?
It plays even better with mouse + kb (more accurate) and you can get a second hand xbox 360 controller for 10$ online.
I think you're making a mistake by snubbing your nose at this game because it doesn't support a controller from a game console that was 2 generations ago.
A new controller is cheap enough. I know you like your controller but sometimes you have to let go of old tech to experience something new. You can't expect developers to code new games to support extremely old peripherals!
Additionally you're going to have the same problem with other games in the future. You're going to miss out on a lot of great titles if you're that stubborn about your old controller.
The other possibility is to use a programm called "Xoutput" from github, which is basically a package of inputtranslators. it's a lot simpler i would say, but the programm has to be opened first in the background manually whenever you play a game and the first keymapping to boot isn't quite as comfortable.
Another last effort would be using "joy2key" to bind the controller to keyboard inputs, but that's even more hacky, i haven't much experience with it in crosscode, which sounds quite tricky for it's kinda twin-shooter-esque gameplay style, might have to set up some script-like macros to the sticks then...
And after all that: please don't forget that it also kinda depends on what kind of usb adapter you got, since that is the one thing that makes all the magic work. Some might work better, others not so. Best would probably have been to directly buy a ps2toXinput adapter, even tho that still can't fix some of the shortcomings of a PS2 controller like no analogue triggers (which comes as a disadvantage for games like Rocket League) and no guide-button for comfort~
