Just how bad is the voice acting/script in the Abbey section of the game?
Just watched Mac's review of the game, and he found the Abbey section of the game to be agonising to get through (and extremely annoying), even although he really like the combat portion of the game (he ended up giving it a score of 5.5 out of 10).

Now I have Fraxis's other (rather similar) game "Chimera Squad". With a combat section that plays just like Xcom and then a locker room portion where your character talk to each other and gain in game bonuses on how well they interact with each other based on your choices. However I only managed about 4 hours of gameplay before I uninstalled it BECAUSE I found that Locker Room script and voice acting extremely annoying. Your "Chimera Squad" is the first interspecies SWAT team, saving the city form various criminals and terrorists/revolutionaries (a rather responsible job). Yet going through the Locker Room portion of the game you wonder how they ever got past the job interview. It all ended up sounding like a mixture of MTV Cribs and a Youtuber House with a cast of teenage "influencers". Scripts like "Person X really fancies person Y but is too scared to ask them out for a date, could you ask them on their behalf?" (Really? a hard bitten SWAT team that's just killed a half dozen people and they act like a high schooler when it comes to ANY social interaction).

Now after watching Mack's review I'm fearful it's more of the same and I'll end up getting so annoyed at the voice acting/scripts in the game that I#ll end up uninstalling the game never to play it again (wow, I'm really sounding like a grumpy swine at the moment). But anyhow how did you did the Abbey portion of the game? Did you want to throw things at the screen, or did you feel it was really well done?

Here is the list of voice actors that we are talking about in this discussion, as if it was actually important. Being "famous" or noteworthy does not increase the quality of someones performance, as is clearly evident from the VA in this game.

https://www.behindthevoiceactors.com/video-games/Marvels-Midnight-Suns/

The only people that are really of note are Jennifer Hale, Matt Mercer, Yuri Lowenthal, and Laura Bailey. That is, Lilith, Male Hunter, Peter Parker, and Magik.

I honestly did not like Tony Starks perforance at all, and would call it one of the worst in the game, along side Dr. Strange. And seeing as their credits are full of unmemorable roles, I am unsurprising.
I liked Strange. He my homie.

The ageism...some of us oldsters have been collecting comics since the gold age and probably have a better understanding of the MU that kids that only know the rebooted universe.
Being well outside of the "youngster" age range myself, I dont disagree.

But between all of the 90s nostalgia, the "Hello fellow kids" dialogue that the younger characters have, and the just general throwback feel of the whole thing, it is obvious someone in the 50+ age bracket was responsible for this writing.

I can see how you'd think that, but there are also a ton of current pop culture references thrown in that I wouldn't expect from the average senior citizen. It's not that self-evident to me that the writer(s) is/are in the 50+ age bracket. It could very well be a team of writers with each developing the dialog for one or more characters. That would make sense with the generational split in the team.
Just for reference, you have to be 65+ to be a senior citizen, at least in the US.

I'm in the US, and some benefits start at 55 which is in my rear view mirror. I am of the Atari generation.

These are some of the top voice actors in the industry, many of which played or voiced these same characters in other games as well as live & animated TV. Not to mention they were probably getting SAG rates and cost a pretty penny.

All that means is that they have had multiple chances to be mid in their performance in these roles.

I fail to see who pay rate has to do with anything. It clearly did not increase the quality of their performances XD
The claim I was responding to was that their choice of voice actors was uninspiring. My point was that they chose from well established veterans in the field. Whether or not somebody recognizes them or likes their work doesn't change that.

Maybe I'm cheesy but I liked the interactions in the Abby.
I think the Abby is fine. I enjoy it as an opportunity to build character development outside of combat.

Sometimes the Abby can feel like it can drag and I want to just move forward with more combat, and some parts of the Abby are better than others, but I think the game is better having it. If you don't like it then you can really just skip through a lot of the interaction, but if you enjoy the Marvel character building and references then there's a lot to be had through the Abby.

It has been a long time since I played that game, but I do think it's better than the Chimera Squad.
Matthew Mercer, Brian Bloom (guy is literally steve rogers himself, been voicing him since 15 years, definitive captain america), Erica Lindbeck (actually makes captain marvel likeable), Yuri Lowenthal(hes good but im christopher daniel barnes generation), Laura Bailey, Steve Blum(again definitive wolverine), Fred Tatasciore (tough guy voice for more than 20 years), Jennifer Hale, Courtenay Taylor(sexy sexy voice, if you dont know her thats on you).

I only agree with strange but only because they prolly told the guy to sound stupid instead of extremely intelligent sorcerer supreme. Tony stark actually nailed it but you guys are so used to RDJ i guess.

sure mate voice acting is bad/ unsinspired. whatever you guys say.

if someone doesnt want to like a game, they will find reasons. and this game surely has some problems like performance and stiff animations. but voice acting is not it.

I kind of agree that the VA are kind of bad.

Tony Stark seems especially bad for me. His lack of confidence, his pettiness, need for validation, and fear of everything around him is a huge contrast to how I usually perceive him. sounds less like a genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist and more like Elon Musk.. Tony Stark can only be based off of one of two people right now. Howard Hughes or Robert Downey Jr.

Peter Parker was always socially awkward but him being the odd one out in a team full of zoomers and a vampire slayer is very VERY cringe.. That's kind of the reason I don't like the Midnight Suns Team. They pander to the zoomer demographic.

Dr. Strange comes off as pretty narcissistic.. It'd make sense if this is how he behaved before gaining the title Sorcerer Supreme, but this is after he's already established the title.

As for the Abbey itself, I feel like exploring it is kind of a slog. I physically run faster than the hunter in the Abbey. Is this to prolong my playtime? Is this also why there's no option to skip combat animations?

LOl. " lack of confidence, his pettiness, need for validation, and fear of everything around him" pretty much exactly descibres Elon Musk

I think the problem is, and I include myself in this, people are so used to the movie portrayals of the characters that its hard to accept anyone else at first. Too me a while, but I really like them all. The game versions are closer to the original comic books if anything.
I think Tony Stark is the most accurate portrayal of any of the characters. He actually corresponds to the coming image and mannerisms.
I think the VA is perfectly fine for what it is, the problem is it bombards you to the point that you spend more time with these cut scenes.. Then actually playing the core aspects of the game. If they had cut down that part by 50%, and gave that 50% to core of the game in combat, deck building, tweaking characters, it would be a way stronger game.
I think people expect Tolkein writing in some games. Personally the story and characters in MMS is perfect for what it is, some campy comic book story. It's not to be taken serious
