same problem here,
i tried to connect my PS4 controller, it works in steam but not when in game, can anybody help?
much of the discussion here is about connecting the controller to the PC.. but this is NOT what the CC (Controller Companion) is all about..

the CC is a software that adds extra functionality to your (already-working) controller, it will not solve any controller-connection issues with your windows.. i.e. if you cannot get your controller to work with your games, you cannot expect it to work with the CC..

i was going to let this thread go because i do not have a PS4 controller, so i am not sure what i can bring to this discussion..

but it's been a week..

connecting a PS controller is a hit and a miss..
meaning, you may get different results with different computers.. it may work on your friend's 10-15 years old computer, and it won't work with your brand-new high-tech computer..

and it is a BIIIIIIIIIG MESS that would require you to remain calm and patient while you try different methods of connecting your PS4 controller to your PC..

and TO BE HONEST, it is much easier for me to recommend to you, to STOP trying to get your PS4 controller to work on your PC.. and go ahead and buy a Wired xBox360 controller, a Wireless xBox360 controller (with its USB wireless reciever) or xBoxOne controller (with its USB wireless reciever)..
or any Windows-compatible controller/gamepad from known brands like (Steam, Logitech.. etc..)

if you lack patience and have some anger issues, do not continue reading this post, and do the above.. the success with PS4 controllers-to-PC depends on the setup you have: the motherboard, the conflicts you have in the device manager, the mood that your controller is in, and other stupid variables..
this is largely from the fact that Sony has never intended to have their PS controller to be connected to its biggest rivals: the PC or Microsoft Windows..

what we have are 3rd party developers who are trying to connect the PS controller to your WindowsOS using emulators..

the bad news, an emulator may NOT work with all computers.. the good news, there are a number of emulators that you can try.. before you raise the white-flag and buy a Steam controller or Xbox controller or ANY other controller with Windows logo stamp on its box (just avoid cheap unknown brands and stick with known brands like Logitech)..
`

the CC comes bundled with this xBox360ce (the letters CE stands for controller emulator, located in the CC settings and under the 'Advance' tab).. xBox360ce attempts to bridge the connection between the PS controller and WindowsOS.. but like many other emulators, the rate of failure is pretty high..

if one emulator fails,
uninstall that emulator and try a different emulator.. in the list of different emulators for PS4 you have SCP-for-PS4, DS4Windows and InputMapper.. and you have a number of loyal fans who swear on their mother's grave that this emulator works.. or that one is the best..
but it ALL depends on the setup you have..

on my computer,
i managed to get my PS3 controller to work with SCP.. but only with USB wired connection..
the Bluetooth function keeps dropping-out in mid-game; and to be honest the Bluetooth connection sucks; so i use the USB cable..
`

step one:
if one emulator fails, make sure you uninstall the emulator completely.. because some emulators will have a negative effect on the next emulator you try..
- the xBox360ce will have a small uninstall button in the settings of CC..
- some emulators like SCP will install some additiontional drivers in the system, and you need to manually uninstall the drivers before moving on (there should be a small uninstall option inside the emulator)..
- some emulators can be deleted by simply deleting its folder, others may need to go to the Control Panel, and remove it at 'Change or Remove a Program'..
- you may need to restart the computer.. (i do it automatically)

step two:
download and install the latest drivers..
1) .NetFrame at https://www.microsoft.com/net/download
2) DirectX https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=35
3) Microsoft Visual C++ https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2977003

if you have Windows10 or Windows8.1 with the latest updates, you may skip step two.. until NOW, there have not been any new updates to those drives..

step three:
download and install the xBox360 controller driver.. at https://www.microsoft.com/accessories/en-us/products/gaming/xbox-360-controller-for-windows/52a-00004
- normally when you plug-in an xBox controller, this driver gets installed automatically, but not with PS controllers.. you have to do it manually..
- also you may want to keep this driver installation program nearby, because some emulators make some permanant changes on the xBox360 driver.. so if one emulator fails and you move on to the next emulator, it is always a good idea to uninstall and re-install this driver.. (this is from months of me stumbling around in circles)..
- you may have to restart your PC after every fresh installation..

step four:
choose your emulator and install them..

i personally prefer to connect the PS controller to the PC using a USB cable.. the Bluetooth wireless option may not work with most computers, even worse, my Bluetooth PS3 controller often get disconnected or reset in mid-game (i.e. it doesn't feel reliable on my computer)..
and again, if one emulator fail, go back to step one above and try another emulator..

- xBox360ce is included with the CC (if you already purchased and downladed the CC).. go to the settings on the CC.. next go to 'Advance' and install xBox360ce.. follow the instructions shown (different computers will have different issues and fixes)..

- i did mention that i do not own a PS4 controller.. however, i have successfully connected my PS3 controller using SCP driver for PS3.. the only thing is that the Bluetooth does not work well with me..

when using the SCP for PS4 controllers, there are 2 methods of installing its drivers: the regular method and the Forced method.. again it depends on your hardware settings..
the video instructions for installing 'SCP for PS4' is at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9gMltAE6BQc&spfreload=10

- other emulators for PS4 are DS4Windows and InputMapper, but i am sure that there are more that i am not aware of.. JUST make sure you completely uninstall these emulators before moving on to the next emulator, restart the PC and re-installing the xBox360 controller driver.. (believe me this saves a lot of headaches)..

- again there are a number of youtube videos that you can look into.. just search for 'how to connect my PS4 to a PC' on youtube search..

step five:
you can test whether the emulator works or not, by pressing the Windows Key and R on your keyboard (Win+R) and type in 'Joy.cpl'.. press ok.. hopefully you would see xBox360 controller in the list.. and if you click on it then click properties.. you should see whether the movement of the joysick corresponds with your PS4 controller..

and before abandoning your current emulator to the next emulator, make a quick visit to Device Manager in the Control Panel of your Windows.. make sure there are no conflicts with the xBox360 accessories driver (usually marked by yellow with a black exclamation mark icon on conflicted devices).. again, depends on YOUR settings, you may have to update some older devices by right clicking on the device in question..

step six:
at this point you should be able to play your games with your PS4 controller.. and you can install CC if you wanted to (unless you already have installed it).. you do not need the CC to have your PS4 controller to work on your PC and with the games you have.. the CC makes the controller to act like a mouse and keyboard, that's all what it does..
`

at the end,
i was very tempted to go wireless.. so i did purchase a USB xBox360 Wireless Reciever to connect with the wireless xBox360 controller.. and i no longer use my PS3 controller on my PC..

all the best
