Controller Companion

Controller Companion

Why does anyone still use this?
This app is clearly abandoned and obsolete, and Steam Input has been able to do a better job for several years now, so why is there still so much activity in the reviews and discussions?

Because GOG.

It's useless if the game already supports controllers, and if it doesn't, Steam Input can fulfill an identical function without even having to launch the game through Steam. Although if the point is just to not have to have Steam running, that's pretty reasonable.

I use it. Until now it hasn't really been missing any features I really needed. I only really use it for treating my controllers as a mouse anyway. I really want to make use of the share button though on the new Series controllers though, so it might be time for me to look around.

I'm only using it as a mouse with some keyboard shortcuts, etc. for web browsing and navigating to different games/programs. It's worked flawlessly for me so far. Certainly not obsolete if that's your goal.

I bought a couple of the new "series X" Xbox controllers and as the poster above said, I would like it if the share button worked with this program. I'm open to checking out some others. I've heard that REWASD is good but haven't dug into it yet. Any suggestions or input on something other than this?

Either way, I've been very happy with the $3 I spent on it.

Edit: For some reason I thought REWASD was more expensive. It's only $6. I think I'll buy it and do some testing tonight/tomorrow.

I spent a couple of hours messing around with REWASD. Here are my findings:

- It's very powerful and configurable. It's also very complicated to set up. At least the learning curve is pretty high.
- I can almost replicate my Controller Companion browser setup, but the scrolling is not smooth like Controller Companion. Instead it's more like you are moving the mouse wheel up and down. I understand that this is intentional but is not what I prefer for scrolling.
- There doesn't seem to be any kind of virtual keyboard. It's nice having that in case I just want to type a few letters and have it autocomplete for me.
- The $6 price tag is misleading. You have to buy different modules to do things such as assign a keyboard shortcut (CTRL+Tab for example.) There are four different modules that cost an additional $9 each. I would need at least one or two of those for my purposes.

Untested/Unknown

- I'm not sure if it can gracefully disable itself when opening a game like Controller Companion does.
- I'm not sure if you can enable/disable it using the controller, as you can with Controller Companion

I do see the value in it but Controller Companion is much simpler to use for my needs. I'd still be open to checking out any other solutions if someone has a suggestion.

i see you got your answer, but this software allows you to use your controller on desktop (too). It never came to my mind that people could use it for games

But they keep trying to sell this dog's breakfast without warning you.. Its criminal. CC works just enough to give you hope and to keep tweaking for days but ultimately does almost nothing right and what it can do, manages to do it poorly.

The problem with using Steam Input is you have to change configurations for each different game, afaik. I have profiles for six different games, even made three myself, and I don't have to worry about changing controls each time I switch to another one of those six games. True, most of the games I play include controller support, but for the ones that don't, this app has been a Godsend, and is well worth the few bucks I spent for it on sale.
Most recently, I had to make a profile for Stardew Valley because, while it has controller support, the keybindings are absurdly counter-intuitive for me and they can't be changed for controller, though they can be for mouse and keyboard.
This app is convenient, well-made, and has support of the Steam community where you can find hundreds of game profiles in the Workshop, and was recently updated to fix a bug that I never new it had in the first place because I'd never experienced it. That's why we use this.

been using this daily for a very very long time .. it enables me too use the pc with the controller like a mouse and has a great keyboard on the analoug and i can enable and disable it in games too change from controller too keyboard emulation without even moving its brill ... only thing i would love too see this software do that it lacks right now is controller battery level in the app .. i know there is separate apps available but it would be great for it too be all in one app ... this software is great ... and that's why its still active and the community is so busy > :)

Controller Companion beats all the alternatives I've tried until now, including Steam Input, Gopher, etc. So it's not obsolete at all. Default configuration is fantastic too.

Steam Input is adequate for mouse emulation but it sometimes deactivates for a second while loading, a couple of places where it won't work... The only place where this app (CC) won't work is inside Windows 10's config menus. So for those who want couch gaming/computing, Controller Companion has the upper hand. (Since this thread doesn't want to die, I though I might as well chime in :)
