This obviously contradicts one of the criteria for a vessel to be pure- no will to break.
Also remember that our character wasn't chosen as the pure vessel in the first place, he was rejected in favour of the Hollow Knight, just like all the others.
He puts the flower in the grave because he has been told to do so. Alternatively you can give the flower to elderbug or refuse to do the quest.
From the white lady quotes "he was tarnished by an idea instilled, but you, you are free of such blemishes, you could contain that thing." "He" referring to the hollow knight
So yeah the probabilities hint that you are actually pure, you became pure somehow... it has probably something to do with that strength they link several times to the pureness of the vessel.
Also, you can just reject to deliver the flower or alternatively as i said before; give it to elderbug
I tend to think that our character at least has a will of his own, separate from the Void. Obviously, we get the chance to make decisions throughout the game, and even show mercy or compassion without being told what to do. Plus, the entire existence of the void heart suggests we are a separate entity.
Also, it's just way more interesting to me to think that the vessels each had an individual mind of sorts (perhaps even the shades, to a lesser degree). Maybe even the Hollow Knight wasn't as pure as the King thought it was. Which would explain the spread of the infection.
It wasnt pure and thats explicitly stated in game, but thats because he was tarnished afterwards not because he had his own mind
Tarnished how? I don't remember that.
The white lady explicitly aays, referring to the hk; "his strength was ill-judged, he was tarnished by an idea instilled" wheb you talk to her without having the void heart; she also says that you are pure at that point; but if you collect the void heart she says that the pulsing emptiness you had has been transformed.
