The age of the bugs in the game
What do you think? How old are all these bugs in the game? I mean, first they talk about Hallownest like it's has been abadoned a long time ago. As if most of it is just a legend. And then there are so many bugs who were apparently born during that era.

It is a bit unclear how long Hallownest has been "dead".
Somethings state that it has been dead for centuries, and somethings states like if it happened a month ago.

In regards to timespan, nothing is really stated, so much as it is vaguely implied.

Not much time could have passed between the Black Egg starting to leak, and the return of Quirrel and the Knight. I believe the fact that Myla is working in the mines, alive and unaware of the encroaching plague, is evidence of this.

Its hard to say how much time passed between the Black Egg first being sealed(the end of the first plague), and Black Egg beginning to leak(the start of the second plague). It has to have been long enough for society to recover(at least partially) from the first plague, but short enough for mortal bugs from that era to have survived(ei; the Nailsmith, Ogrim, etc).

There is also the mystery of the ancient civilization that existed long before the Pale King's rule. The ancient bugs who worshipped the darkness itself. The ones who constructed those Soul Totems. What happened to them?

The time was long enough at least for allmost everyone to forget. The evidence of this is that Relic Seeker Lemm is at the fountain in the City of Tears and he states that he doesn't know who the Hollow Knight was. The black egg was pretty successful, but sadly as we all know failed. (that extra 1% out of 99% will always get ya!)

A plague wiping out many of Hallownest's inhabitants would cause a mass-loss of information. All the survivors have to go on is what they already know, and what can be gleamed from Journals and the like. Any information not recorded in some way is essentially lost to them. And since there doesn't seem to be one uniform written language, as implied by Lemm, that makes things worse.

I guess it's unsolvable given that point. It could go either way.

Hmm, from Soul Master we know that the do not only have researched soul in order to find a way to beat the radiance but also in order to find a way to prolong their live span (Soul Master himself went even so far, that he wanted to become immortal). So maybe "important" bugs in the Hallownest society were granted a prolonged lifespan.

An interesting fact that hints to it (even though it's not a real proof) is that Quirrel "felt his age" in the moment his servitude to Monomon ended.

I have wondered about this. I think the world of Hallownest may be a lot stranger than we may suspect. Time may work differently. Team Cherry has said that even the 'surface' of the world, where Dirtmouth and the Howling Cliffs are located, is not in fact the surface and itself is underground in a large cavern. So the inhabits may age differently, and have greatly extended lifespans. Some may be centuries old, or older.

@jyakimow:
Do you have a link to the source of it? I mean to: "is not in fact the surface and itself is underground in a large cavern"
