If you want an alternative to think about, the Watcher Knights, False Knight and Hunter share the exact same battle them. I wonder if there is any connection between them. 🤔

The nailsmith states that hegemol was "soft spoken" so that isn't completely crushative of the theory. It's an interesting idea nonetheless.
Based on the design of Hedgemol's armor, I think he was a Hercules Beetle, or at very least, something in the Dynastinae family. If he were a smaller creature piloting an exosuit, perhaps a grub then? Could Grubdad be Hedgemol? Probably not.
Xemer looks to be some sort of dart moth, possibly this one: http://montgomeryshiremoths.org.uk/macro%20moths/pics_large/2080%20Square-spot%20Dart_2.jpg
Isma appears to have very long antennae & thicc legs, so maybe she's a cricket or a katydid. Though her mask does have 6 eyes, that doesn't mean she has 6 true eyes. Its possible that the reason some masks in-game have multiple sets of eyes is based on how some insects have false eyes IRL(wasps being a notable example of this).
I'm not too sure about Dryya though. I really can't tell what she is.
Then again, I can't expect everything to be accurate to their insipration.
After all, the female mantis in the game are small, slender, and dull-colored compared to the male who is large, bulky, and comparitively more vibrant in color... while the opposite is true IRL.

About people assuming Hegemol's gender based in it's armor, it's totally plausible, but there's nothing confirmed. There's theories about Sly being Hegemol 'cause the size of his nail (not that "nail", but the one he uses in combat) and 'cause the three nailmasters (or at least Sheo) are/is Hegemol's fan(s).
"Mighty Hegemol was always my favorite. What a towering figure he was, though surprisingly soft spoken for one so large." -Nailmaster Sheo
