Hollow Knight

Hollow Knight

What charm spec do you love?
Everyone has their own favorite charm builds and the charms allow for so much customization once you collect them all. Some things like soul boost aren't needed if you aren't getting hit so you can focus more on melee attack strength. Perhaps a boss has little time for healing and you want a good strong offense instead. Or maybe you're going after those Dream Bosses and want to custom tailor a build targeting their vulnerabilities that makes each trivial. You can stack up extended swords with quick strike for a melee assassin, go full caster with spirit boosts and enhanced spells, you can go full on tank with invuln extension and tons of blue orbs, you can go for a sustain paladin with quick heals and high soul recovery, or even some sort of minion master that summons exploding gas clouds or flying mouths.

What kind of "class" did you create? What skills drew your attention?

Personally I'm an all-arounder that likes to enhance overall characters rather than focus heavily to the inclusion of others. So I went with Soul Catcher, Longnail, Gathering Swarm, and Compass for most of the game. Now that I have all the stuff unlocked, I'm sticking to a similar build and just upgrading Longnail -> Mark of Pride and adding Quick Slash. It makes a quick attacking character who makes just enough soul to stay alive with how often I get hit.

I use all combination I can find, TBH.
But yeah, I make my own "charm class" whenever I choose certain set.

Facetank dare-devil: Grubsong, Thorn of Agony, Defender's Crest, Quick Slash

Spell Master: Spell Twister, Soul Catcher, Shaman's Stone, Dream Catcher

Nail Master: Longnail/Mark of Pride, Quick Slash, Nailmaster's Glory (add Dashmaster for more awesomeness)

Just wanna survive the boss: Mark of Pride/Longnail, Soul Catcher, Grubsong, Stalwart Shell, Quick Focus/Shape of Unn

♥♥♥♥♥♥ platforming: Hiveblood, Grubsong

I usually changed my charms for specific boss fights to capitalize on their weaknesses (or to mitigate my own..)
In the case of most bosses I would use Nail master because one charge does more damage than three quickslash attacks in the same amount of time. However, in the case of bosses that are out of reach for nail arts (see: true end boss) or dodge too quickly (see: dream Soul Master), I would use either Fragile Strength or quickslash to catch them as often as I could.
A typical staple of mine is Quick Focus + Nail Arts + Dream Wielder (for ez soul) + Dashmaster + Grubsong + Spore shroom + Defenders crest
It allows constant DoT with bursts of high damage from my nail arts or Abyss magic. (Shriek and Dive do so much damage).
For the final boss I used Shape of unn + Quick focus + Grubsong + Soul catcher + Stalwart shell.
Dash Master / Nail Master / Mark of Pride / Quick Slash. And Quick focus, only when i'm in struggle.
Hiveblood + Grubsong makes you basically immortal during casual exploration. I also used Fragile Strength with it, since your chances of dying to anything that's not a boss battle become minimal, and the obvious compass and Nailmaster's Glory just in case.

For boss battles I usually like a tanky build with Quick Focus, Stalwart Shell, and either Soul Eater + Grubsong or Soul Catcher, Quick Slash and Grubsong.

For the Radiance I ended up having to use Fragile Strength because I just lacked the skill to face it in a drawn-out battle without eventually ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ up. I tried to use the lifehack of quitting the battle just before dying every time I was messing up, but I still ended up with many, many trips to the Leg Eater anyways =D
Long Nail is a must. Never leave the house without it. Preferable to Mark of Pride since it takes up one notch less.

Soul Catcher+Spell Twister+Grub Song make life a lot easier when exploring. Spell Twister+ Soul Catcher let you pound out Vengeful Spirit like no one's business. And in combination with Grubsong, even without Hiveblood, you will have so much Soul to spare you'll be basically invincible.

For bosses i really like the idea of scumming it up with Glowing Womb + Defender's Crest. Nosk couldn't even touch me. Unfortunately the accumulating particle effects make it really tough to follow what's going on on screen and will make you run smackdab into the boss during hectic fights. For general boss layout i usually go with the standard of Long Nail+Soul Catcher+Stalwart Shell, and then add a variety of Quick Focus/Grubsong/Sharp Shadow/Thorns of Agony/Fragile Strength, whatever seems most suited for the specific battle.

Quick Slash is a lot of people's favorite but i don't find it improves my fighting performance all that much. Give me Long Nail/Quick Focus/Stalwart Shell instead any day. And Baldur's Shell seems useful at first but may actually be the most useless of all charms...? I always felt like getting hit more with it than without it. Quick Focus>Baldur's Shell by a long shot.
Baldur Shell would have been really useful but it breaks way too fast. I thought of using it as protection against bosses that have attacks I just find really hard to dodge, like Elder Hu. But it broke within what, 5 hits from him? and left me defenseless. What a piece of trash.

Where is mark of pride? I've heard it mentioned a lot as a better longnail, but I missed it in my run (just beat the game).
It is in the mantis village in a chest room near the mantis lords
I've started using fragile strength and some melee boosters, but I also really like my healing-focused build. Deep focus, baldur shell, shape of unn, spore shroom, nailmaster's glory. Mostly so I can be a mushroom covered snail. On the final boss, I got really serious about the healing build and just took Deep focus, quick focus, and shape of Unn. Really good combination. I feel like deep focus might be underrated.

Using sharp shadow and dashmaster is fun. The only problem I have with dashmaster is that if I get used to it, not using it feels awful by comparison.

Both of the range boosts are great, but I found that once I started using Nailmaster's Glory and nail arts a lot, I didn't need the extra range on my basic attack. Depends whether you have time to charge up or not, really. And between long nail vs. quick slash, quick slash is awesome for non-flying bosses, because you can get almost twice as many hits on them when there's an opening. But the range boost is a better option against anything that flies, and quick slash will be irrelevant in most of those cases. On the other hand, if I can avoid enough attacks to charge nail arts, it's a great way to dash in and do damage quickly without needing either of those other charms.
Quick Slash, Mark of Pride, Dashmaster, and most of the time Joni's Blessing as well.
Sprintmaster, Sharp Shadow, Dashmaster, Quick Slash, and Quick Focus.

This really helps when you have to advance on an enemy during their attack. Makes dodging a heck of a lot easier while on the move. Made the Hollow Knight boss battle easy.
Unbreakable Strength,Steady Body,Grubsong,Sharp Shadow,Dream Wielder,Dreamshield.
Not the greatest combination ever, but It helped me to beat the trial of the fool.Dreamshield + sharp shadow together could 1-shot Armored squits and Primal aspids and helped to pass that anoying wave 14.
I just beat the colosseum with these combos:
- Mark of pride + Heavy blow to stay safe on ground, juggle without risks and push airborn enemies on spikes.

- Nailmaster's glory + Shaman stone because a neutral super slash followed by a spell kill everything in a quick one-two combo. Also the spin attack is very good to get souls from slow enemies.

- Steady body + Shaman stone when you are surrounded or you want to quickly finish off a mini-boss, just mash one of the vertical spells until everyone's dead.

Tl;dr: multiple powa blast depending on situations.
My build is a tank class.
Fragile Strength+Unbreakable Heart+Whatever's good for what I'm facing.
