But yeah actually get good at fighting him first. You can challenge him directly from his statue downstairs. Figure out all the timing, then the pantheon will be a breeze.
I have two other recommendations. One, you are practicing him in the Hall of the Gods, and not going through the entire pantheon for another try, correct? Personally I practiced these final bosses until I could beat them twice in a row before going for the pantheon clear, so I knew I would have a good chance of victory once I got there.
Two, when you go to practice him and get to that phase, don't try to attack him for a bit, just focus on dodging. His fast zippy movements around the screen are scary at first, but most of them are actually meaningless. You can stand mostly still in the center of the screen and just dodge away from his spin attack, or on the occasions he would run directly into you. Once you understand the rhythm of the attack, getting your hits in can be done at your leisure, because he only has that one move and it is not hard to avoid once you figure it out.
