For me the Mantis Lords fight (typically the next real boss battle, after Hornet) is when the game clicked for me....
It's up to you, either you keep playing or just move on to the next thing on your list.
Hollow Knight isn’t a game that lays everything out for you. It has a strong start, but it really shines the more you explore and piece things together yourself. If you're used to games that guide you from point A to B with clear objectives, I can see how this might feel slow or overwhelming at first.
Four hours is still very early. If you're willing to let the game lead you by curiosity rather than instruction, it absolutely gets better. Give it a bit more time and try to embrace the unknown. It's not everyone's cup of tea, but if it clicks, it's unforgettable.
Also now I had the Dash and claw, and finally figured out about How to pogo…
The game felt to simplistic, up to this point… then it didn’t.
Also I was coming off beating Metroid Dread… So which is action packed from the beginning, and you were given a reason for why you are there…
The lack of reason for what you are doing, didn’t help.
Well, for me that's when it actually ended. After trying to beat Hornet for several dozens of times - I had to decide this game just is not for me. Pity because a lot of other things really clicked for me.
I usually play games to have fun. If I have fun, I may decide to play the game to really "git gud".
But if I have to "git god" first before I can start to overcome intentional frustration and have fun, that's usually a game breaker for me...
Just putting in a difficulty slider to not totally exclude casual or maybe not so skillfull players sure would not have done any harm to anyone... :(
I wouldn't say that the game requires anyone to git gud. Hornet, for example, is audio cues (since she calls out many of her attacks) and just getting into her face. Same with most of the enemies, really: audio cues, and don't hang back. The game sometimes punishes sitting back and waiting since it allows enemies to just keep attacking.
That said, it may well be that the game just isn't for you. If you weren't having fun, don't play it. Move onto something else. You can't force fun, and some things just won't be to your taste.
I play Hollow Knight now for fun - and the desire for that intense, 'souls-like' experience went after the second playthrough on Absolute Radiance and after a Steel Soul run
It is now enjoyable - and far, FAR less 'souls-like' - and I regret nothing.
