Please help... getting frustrated with the map
Hello! I need some help, because this is driving me nuts. The map simply will not update.

I'm about 2.5 hours into the game. I've progressed to the... I dunno, kind of jungly area? Off to the left of the first main area. It's got a lot of vegetation. Nothing in that area at all will show up on the map, no matter how many times I do it.

I've got the compass, I can see myself off in the black area... I've got the quill and paper in my inventory.

I've tried from the bench and from elsewhere... nothing ever updates. When I go to my inventory, it says "Hold (LB)" in the description of the quill. I try that... doesn't do anything. I go to the map screen and try it... all that does is scroll tabs to the left. I tried switching to keyboard, and it says "Hold (TAB)" but also nothing happens.

I've tried this seated at the bench in the new jungle area, as well as standing next to the bench.. I've jumped around a dozen rooms there, got quite a ways in... still have absolutely nothing showing up on the map. I've saved at that bench no fewer than 10 or so times, trying to figure out what I'm doing wrong, but nothing ever populates on the map. I tried going back to town, and trying from the bench there... I even bought the stupid red and blue shell markers that say they are special markers for the map. I've cleaned out that one store. Still nothing shows on the map other than the town, and the first major area.

Can anyone help me understand what is wrong? Because it's really frustrating. Thanks

You need to find Cornifer in every area and purchase a "starter" map section for that area. Once you do, everywhere you've explored in that area will be automatically added though.

FYI, in one of the areas you'll encounter later, Fog Canyon, you cannot access Cornifer the first time you enter the area. You have to re-enter the area from a different area much later to get to him, the first time you get to Fog Canyon just head straight down and you'll get through quickly.

Yeah I remember this... sitting at a bench and expecting to update and it doesn't... I then stumble on Cornifer,, It was then "ah have to buy new maps... got it"
I was so glad to hear that Humming of his is all the areas.... YAY! New Map!

I am super thankful that you clarified that while simultaneously somewhat incredulous that they would design it in such a way as to be... difficult like that. Lol.
Ok, well, it is what it is. Thanks for the help!

It could have been designed in a way that made this more clear for sure, because it is very unclear from the description on the quill that this is how it works.

Isn't the map and quill the same item (once you have at least one map)?

It does tell you that you have no map for the area when you try to open it (by pressing the map button from outside the inventory), though i agree that it isn't the clearest message.

At the very least, Greenpath is fairly linear until you reach Cornifer, so there isn't much potential to get lost until that part is cleared up.

FYI, there are pieces of paper around that kind of lead you to where Conifer is. If you hit a new area, maybe try to follow them to get the map early.

If you find Cornifer on the Crossroads for the first time he should tell you about the map system. Of course you might just forget about this mechanic (or any other game mechanic in any game) and miss the map on later areas.

But you should find Cornifer. The paper scattered on the ground are the first signs he is near. And as you get closer you'll hear him humming.

If by any chance you miss him and he moves to another area, you'll find a note (a white rectangle with a drawing of his glasses) on the ground, telling you that you can purchase the map at the store.
