Whether they want to do combat with each other or not, I get the impression people see the videos on Youtube where multiple content creators get together and do multiplayer, and want to try it themselves. It can be a lot of fun to watch, so it's no surprise a lot of folks want to try it out. If you're not familiar, fireb0rn's got a series of videos that go back quite a bit.
Watching those vids (and maybe some of the speedrunning bingo races out there that aren't multiplayer but could be) might give you an idea of the different kinds of coops (like pogo opportunities) and PvP games (like higher stakes races) that can be arranged between people, if they're creative about it.
