Transferring a gamepass save to the pc version
So I recently bought the steam version of Hollow Knight, but I made a lot of progress in the PC gamepass version. Looking into it, out side of the config file location, the save file is in the same location and format. Is it compatible with the steam version or will I need to convert the save?

Edit: A little late on the topic, but yes the saves are identical, achievements also carried over too by some miracle.

if you're trying to move game files over however, the names of folders (and possibly files) are not 100% identical.
For example in the GamePass version of the game the data folder is simply called Data, but in the steam release it's hollow_knight_Data.

Gamepass? Xbox gamepass? I'm not sure how that works, but if you played it on pc with gamepass, then it might have a file directory where the save files are stored, which is probably what you found considering what you said, so just try to copy those into the steam Hollow Knight save file location (i forgot what the file location was on windows, but you can find it by looking it up). If you played it on an Xbox though, then i doubt you can transfer your saves.

Sorry I should've specified I was referring to the PC gamepass version. The save file location is the same for both versions, but I don't want to overwrite my progress in the gamepass version when I start the steam version. It's not something I NEED to do right away, but when it gets removed I don't want to have to start from the beginning.

Ah, in that case, i think the saves should appear fine if you turn off steam cloud temporarily.

The saves are probably the same, but I wouldn't know for sure. Do they work with these tools?

https://bloodorca.github.io/hollow/

Also, you should know your achievements are tied to your PC's registry and not the save files themselves. I really don't know if the relevant registry keys would get overwritten or not when you change over (but again, they probably at least work the same I would guess).

They should work, if they are stored in the same folder. But you can also just make sure you make save backups before launching the game, so you won't lose any progress.

I know I'm late to this but did you find out if it worked? I'm in a similar scenario

Try looking at this topic, because in 2022 with update 1.5.80 things have changed for the PC Gamepass / Microsoft Store version:

I FOUND THE SOLUTION!!!
There’s no tutorial online, and it seems complicated, but it’s actually quite simple. Here’s what you need to do:

Locate your Xbox Game Pass save files at the following path:

mathematica
Copia codice
C:\Users\[name]\AppData\Local\Packages\TeamCherry.[SERIAL]\SystemAppData\wgs
Inside this folder, you’ll find another folder with a serial number as its name. Open it: it will contain the save folders, each with a serial number as its name, and a file called container.index.

Inside each save folder, you’ll find two files, for example:

44D8B170E3C94B6DBE42B17724249F51
container.1
Take the first file (the one with the long name) and copy it to your desktop. Rename this file as userX.dat, where X is the slot number of the save you want to overwrite. For example, to overwrite slot 3, rename the file to user3.dat.

Paste the renamed file into the Steam save folder:

mathematica
Copia codice
C:\Users\[name]\AppData\LocalLow\Team Cherry\Hollow Knight
And that’s it! Your save will now be available in the Steam version of Hollow Knight. I hope this guide helps others who are in the same situation!
