What is the appeal of this game
Nintendo Switch here. Idk if the finished version is on PC or some other platform but I played more than the average negative reviewers that just go down kill a few bugs then hit dislike. After the fungal wastes I decided that I wasn't going to waste my time anymore. Can someone explain why this game is so hyped?

Lore, music, boss fights, art, etc. If you don't like Metroidvania games, you probably wouldn't like it, but otherwise it's one of the best in the genre

I play on PC, but I don't see any reason why Switch would be any different. Out of curiosity, what about it feels unfinished?

I enjoyed Ori but this game just feels like 2D dying light. It just feels like I'm jumping on things and spamming a attack.

I mean, you'll unlock more attacks later just like Ori, and what you are describing is literally Ori, at least HK got more enemies and actual bosses

Switch version is the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ version, esp on handheld mode, so that could be a factor why you didn’t get the brilliance of this game.

I am also playing on Switch, and this is probably one of the best games I have ever played. I played both Ori games, and they were great, but this is even better in my opinion. Yes, it is insanely difficult, but that just feels so satisfying when finally beating a boss or completing a spike jump puzzle. It took me 15 tries to kill the Traitor Lord boss. Now I'm reading strategies here which should hopefully help me enjoy it even more. I beat the 2nd colisseum of fools (took me 3 tries) but I am scared to try the 3rd one. I also just beat the giant Metroid in Fog canyon which was super satisfying after dying like 6 times :)

Music is probably 50% of my enjoyment with this game. It is so beautiful and immersive. It also has some seriously creepy parts that remind me of the scary bosses in Witcher 3. The story feels strange and a bit disorganized, but I don't really play these Metroid games for the story. I just enjoy this formula of 2D exploration, finding level ups, new techs that open up new areas, boss fights, rinse and repeat-never get tired of this formula...

Metroid Dread was also fun, but it was kind of short. I did 100% on normal and hard in Metroid Dread and happy to discover Metroidvania games which can continue to fill that void for me after beating all the Metroid games I could find. The Metroid Primes were also great, but I prefer 2D

The length of the game and the challenge of the bosses. Most other metroidvanias are simply too short or easy in comparison.

The entire game.

For me, after playing elden ring and getting my arse kicked, coming to hollow knight was a treat. It's the perfect combination of leisure play, and challenge.

I have never played many metrovania games, but this game has made me want to play them all.

The platforming is challenging, risky, and rewarding.

The boss fights are difficult, exciting, frustrating, and just an absolute thrill to figure out.

Honestly to name off everything that pulls me in would take forever.

The progression of skills you get from exploring the massive world, it's just all amazing.

This will be a game I'll be going for platinum in

this was my thoughts as well. especially if we are talking the Blind Forest, where you spam 1 attack button with auto-aim.

I have played Hollow Knight both on PC and Steam Deck, though most of the time it was spent on PC because I already developed a habit on playing it with a keyboard/mouse and I felt comfortable than when I was playing on a handheld console.

To me, what I did enjoy the most is the non-linearity aspect of the game. You have the opportunity to finish it however you like, yet there are some areas that can still be explored around. Not to mention the secret areas (not that there are many of them though, at least per dungeon). You just can't get bored. The areas themselves are also well designed with each unique lore behind them.

What I did personally like also is the OST, the soundtrack is just majestic IMHO. I have a soft spot for Cite of Tears and Queen's Gardens OSTs (Greenpath OST is also really nice) in my heart.

Of course this is not to say I never had negatives. This is the first Metroidvania-esque game that I played and I had lots of frustrations as firsthand experience. For one, it tests your patience so any small innocent mistake is a slap in your face. Persistence is the key here so it's understandable HK is not for everyone, taking a break and coming back when you feel ready is what I would recommend. People generally hype about the challenging aspects of the game or just the richness in contents this game has, that's all.
The only bad thing in this game is bench placement (or lack of checkpoint) before bosses.

When I die on a boss, I know I will spend a minut doing nothing just totry again. So a bad-medium player will spend a lot of time doing really boring walking,

Other than that, I think the game is really really great

Whoa... this is almost exactly the experience i had with the game, being my first metroidvania and playing with keyboard and mouse. I completely agree with everything in this post
