If you want to do Colo Trials with 5 masks of health and you're having trouble, just keep building on your skill with movement/platforming. (This can be by playing through the game a couple of times to build up your intuitive understanding of how movement works in the game in general, or it can do be by grinding one spot to build up the specific skills for that spot.)
I can't remember if you were the person who didn't want to use spells and nail arts with Strength and Shaman Stone charms, but if not, then remember those can help a lot to clear out flying enemies.
If that's you or you also want to learn strategies for playing with low equipment, then also: if you need more room to dodge Primal Aspid spits, remember you can always fall toward a spiked floor and bounce off it with your nail repeatedly as needed. And sometimes you can just hit flying enemies from above (if they're flying low enough), or knock lighter enemies off platforms and into the spikes for a quick environmental kill.
If you successfully complete those challenges, your hollow knight skill ascends.
The skill which speedrunners develop and show in this game never ceases to amaze me. I know that with practice (and patience!) everyone's skills grow... but damn, even when I'm trying to do what in comparison is a baby challenge it can feel so hard.
My skills are definitely improving, which is really why I actually love it. Before I tried to do them with a lowish number of masks (although not really that low) I feel like my skill was slowly increasing, but now the game is saying 'you can do a lot better. Improve'.
I think I similarly want to try and do everything fast and aggressive because I feel like more of a badass, but if this playstyle is preventing me from completing the coliseum trials then I must adapt. Thanks for the relyea recommendation, this looks to be an excellent resource.
Either way i'll always respect speedrunners in any game (as long as they're not cheaters) and i like the hollow knight community, it's not really that toxic.
