I feel the "Vania" more refers to a combat-heavy style with little platforming, like SOTN. HK has much more than the vania titles.
>That Metroidvania is a horrible word to label games with
It was never meant to be a genre label...it was just a quirky name that some journalist came up with when SOTN came out. If anything the "vania' part is giving too much credit to Castlevania...SOTN borrowed from Metroid as much as all the rest of these titles. I just call them all "Metroid-clones."
> It's just a 2-D side-scroller that's a lot of fun.
I'd go with a side-scrolling action/platformer. But the Metroid title is just to describe the sprawling maze-like map.
I do not mean to be mean but what does this have to do with the discussion? I don't even think the word metroidvania was mentioned in the discussion.
