How do i make long jumps

there are so many jumps in hollow knight that i cant do because its far away. i tried many times but it wont work. i'm new to hollow knight w/ only a few hours in. thank you for your time.

just hold down the jump button, you'll find different lengths of time you hold the jump button will cause you to jump higher or shorter depending on how long you hold the jump button. works with monarch wings as well

those longer jumps you also need an upgrade that you get later in the game to reach as well

^^^ This, and if you want help remembering what places to come back to later, I recommend using map markers. This is a big game to explore.

Is this your first metroidvania game too by any chance? It's fine, everyone started somewhere. Higher jumps either require you to keep the jump button pressed longer (this you probably know already), or you may not yet have a specific ability to reach new areas and you can try searching for it by exploring the game world and going somewhere else.

A good tip from kanna to use map markers to mark any places you can't reach yet — it will save you time later and you will always know where to explore next.

You can quickly double-press the map button to use the markers and view a full map (no need to go to inventory each time).
