Lost in Fungal Wastes

As the topic says. I reached a bench early on, right next to it there is a guy called Leg Eater and from him I can buy Fragile Greed/Strength/Health.
From there, I have no idea where to go.
I reached a mushroom that throws orange stuff at you and his secondary attack is smashing his head on the ground.
I managed to go down where the purple bouncy mushrooms are and reached mantis but I feel like I'm missing a crucial upgrade because they seem very strong.
So, two questions: where do I go from there and how do I get a map? I think I would figure this out myself but I'm so used to having maps in games I just can't live without it.

You havent found Cornifer to buy his map? Try to find him in Fungal Wastes so you can have an idea of the area or find a stag station and go back to Dirthmouth and buy older maps from Iselda. You can skip the Mantis Sisters for now but I dont know where you can go, maybe City of Tears? There you can upgrade your nail.

You need to go to the mantis village to grab the mantis claw, it's in the upper area of the village which let's you get to the city. You don't actually need to clear the whole village yet, you can just grab the claw and leave to the city, the Mantis Village is a bit hard as you can start it early if you're up for the challenge.

just keep going down being carefull not to die to acid on the way down. eventually you will find a way out VIA an item

Okay, now I found the Mantis Claw and went to City of Tears. I upgraded the claw and now I can go to Soul Sanctum to fight Soul Master. Is that the right time, or should I go somewhere else and grab some more upgrades before I fight him? I tried to fight him twice and got my butt kicked hard. Should I just practice until I beat him?

There is no right path through the game. You can go off and try and find other things to do around the map. Get the lantern and explore dark rooms, get a key and explore the waterways, beat the mantis lords and explore deep nest, (but deep nest is the hardest area in the game so be warned). Once you the claw and cloak, the game really opens up to exploring

Fighting him wouldn't hurt you, you can get a lot of geo from that area as well as a charm that halves the cost of spells, you can learn his pattern after a few tries and I think it's worth it.
