That said, it's fine to use it until you learn your way around the maps and get an idea of what's what. But definitely nix it for something more useful any time you're going into a boss battle.
if you have the memory of a normal human you can probably do without.
My second playthrough, it went on at the end of the game, after I grabbed the collector's map and hunted for grubs.
My third, I finally stopped using it.
Although whenever I respawn at a bench reasonably close to a troublesome boss, and I want to experiment with the charms, I usually take off the Wayward Compass. That free notch slot is very helpful for charms like Grub Song. (Which gives you soul when taking damage.)
As well, which mantis boss do you mean? If it's the defecting Mantis Lord, it's safe to put him off until nearly the end of the game. He's a tough cookie that eats two masks per hit; a bit scary to tackle without more charm notches.
