Steam Cloud only stores 3 last used save slots (instead of all 4)
Hey, guys! I just tested this. The last save slot I used (with the oldest modification date) eventually gets deleted automatically from Steam Cloud (sometimes after second game closing). Only 3 save slots (6 files total for Windows platform - there is always one 1.4.3.2 duplicate) are stored in the Cloud at the same time.

Does it work the same for you?
Maybe it is a max total size cap issue? (saves with more Game Completion are much larger)

EDIT: Yes, it seems like it's the total storage cap: https://sta.sh/02cuaunn47o2
~1952 KB total storage space for all Hollow Knight saves doesn't seem that much.
I wonder if this works as a total for all platforms together?

Here is your Steam Cloud storage for Hollow Knight if you wish to check it: https://store.steampowered.com/account/remotestorageapp/?appid=367520

Example how this looks like for me:

PS. I know Steam Cloud can be unreliable and should be used only as an alternative to save backups, no worries 🙂 This is just an experiment to validate if this behaviour is consistent with other people and can be useful for topics about using Steam Cloud in Hollow Knight.

Interesting find...
I also have 6 files for Windows.
Plus another 2 for Mac.
I think each platform has their own individual space - will test and see though (they total 1,869.92 KB at the moment).
I'll get a screenshot when I'm on my PC.

Yes, very interesting.

I see in my cloud data that my slot 2 files are missing, and that is indeed my oldest save.

Thanks for sharing. This could be useful to know.

That's even more interesting: slot 2 save file is missing for the three of us...
I'll have to check if it's also my oldest save.

Thats most likely what caused my save file to dissapear, nice to finally know :/
Thanks for checking it!

Now it seems the mystery of disappearing Cloud saves for many people here is solved... they disappear because the files grow bigger with save progress and there is not enough space for them in the Cloud. So Steam deletes the oldest files to make room for the newest files.

The "user2.dat" seems a funny coincidence! In my case Steam Cloud just deletes the oldest files when there is not enough space for the new file. Slot 2 save was the oldest one I played before doing the screenshot.

Not sure what the duplicates user*_1.4.3.2.dat actually are needed for. Without them this issue wouldn't be present, as there would be 2x the space for saves in the Cloud.

When I compare user*.dat to user*_1.4.3.2.dat, they are identical:

Storage is shared across platforms.

HK's Steam Auto-Cloud settings:

About Steam Auto Cloud:

TC should increase the storage space - I think it can still be done.
Thanks for the links, it looks possible to increase it!

The issue is also confirmed by looking at %Steam Install%\logs\cloud_log.txt

We have just increased the storage per user to 10MB, 16 files (was previously 2MB, 10 files). Hopefully this fixes it!
Wow, thanks very much for this!

Whoa, that's great news. Thanks for this and for an amazing game, Team Cherry!
