If you feel that it’s impossible to get out now, here is a useful hint: Check what’s upper right to the first floor elevator.
It's a bit of a trek though, so if you're afraid you might die at any point, remember to pause and quit to menu. Whatever you've collected to that point will be saved and you can start again with full health.
*edit*
alternatively, you could also post a screenshot of where you died and maybe we can help you find your Shade (unless you died on the other side of that door).
If you feel comfortable with more of the soldier guys you've been fighting (but all at once), go left. If you don't want to deal with a bunch of them at once you can try going to the right into the *beginning room* of the Soul Sanctum only (do not go too far up yet!). Once you get past the ONE new enemy, go up and *Immediately* go left. The Soul Sanctum music should fade out and you should be able to hear Cornifer humming nearby. Then you'll know you're on the right track.
That was a tense watch!!
*edit* And the Belflies. Also the Belflies. :'D
@OP, do you know how to pogo? Downswing your nail at metallic objects and enemies below you to harmlessly bounce off of them (and often you can damage enemies while doing it).
Definition of a room in Hollow Knight is usually something that requires a black screen transition (loading).
I might be wrong, though. But that is how it mostly worked.
Protip #2: Did you know that you can save all your progress, return to the last bench and restore full health by Esc/Start -> Quit to Menu?
This also can prevent backtracking and even dying and permanent Geo loss in dangerous areas/situations if used correctly. (1-2 health masks left with no soul to heal)
