The ability you're referring to is called Monarch Wings, and it's located in the Ancient Basin area (all the way on the left side of Ancient Basin), below the Royal Waterways area. And in order to get the Monarch Wings there, you first have to defeat a boss called Broken Vessel.

But, if you've only found three areas so far (Dirtmouth, Forgotten Crossroads, Greenpath?), you still have a long way to go. Don't worry, it's designed that way. Just keep playing and exploring and enjoy your first playthrough. Good luck
It is somewhere in the area of Ancient Basin. It is a skill to be acquired a bit later in the game. If you only found three areas, you are just starting the game 🙂 It may take you some time before you will be able to find it. The game is designed for playing as you go and discovering everything on your own, so no need to worry about finding it early.

I think you will need something you get in Crystal Peak before being able to get to the place you want to.
But even when Crystal Peak is directly connected to the Forgotten Crossroads, it is a mid-game area, so I don't suggest you to go there untill you are well prepared.

Defeating broken receptacle in Ancient Basin

Double jump is called Monarch Wings in the game. It is available as a reward for beating one of the game's bosses, accessed via a door that opens behind the boss after their defeat which would lead to an area containing the Monarch Wings.

The area is called Ancient Basin and the boss in question is called Broken Vessel.

To access this area, you may need to access another area prior to get another ability that gives you a long multi-screen dash. This is because to access the boss you have to cross a bed of spikes that lasts like 3 screens. It is technically accessible without if you can manage to perfectly 'pogo' bounce your way across by down-attacking on the spike for the bounce but I wouldn't recommend it.

(Incidentally, perfecting 'pogo'ing is an essential skill in Hollow Knight especially in later stages of the game)

To access the super long dash, which in the game is called Crystal Heart (it is NOT an upgrade to your regular dash, but an entirely different ability with a conditional activation) and would be found in a region called Crystal Peak. It is not tied to the area boss, and could be located if you were to explore the area fully.

To better access the second location with the Crystal Heart, it is better you have purchased the lamp, or Lumafly Lantern, that gives you light in pitch black dark areas of the map. This is because the zone has a few areas that are pitch black, most notably its entrance iirc. Its 'usual' entrance via the toll entrance also requires the possession of Lumafly Lantern I think; the other entrance is an obscure entry where it requires Desolate Dive which is a skill you gained by defeating Soul Master in Soul Sanctum, a sub-region in the City of Tears

The lamp/Lumafly Lantern is sold by Sly, a merchant that you rescued in an abandoned house that is near Gruz Mother, in a area below her accessible after her defeat, in the Forgotten Crossroads.

The gist is that, the double jump is a mid-late game upgrade for the playable character. So if you're still new to the game and early in progress, then don't worry about it.

Just to correct you, you can pogo most of the way, but at the end, there is a ledge that you can't get up without Crystal Heart or Monarch Wings.

I've never successfully pogo'ing my way across since I always give up early when I nose dive into the spikes after like 3 pogos because I'm a FILTHY CASUL (god i hate this meme lmao). But I've always assumed some crazy speedrunner might have done it for breakfast by somehow barely clipping the swing arc on the spike ledge and go up that way.

I am not sure if it's actually do-able, though, as I just assumed it (especially you kinda need to do something similar to access Nailmaster Sheo iirc. Unless I've been doing that wrong all this time). If not, then good correct.

The ledge is possible to get over without those abilities, but you need to use a Shade skip with one nail upgrade.
Die next to the ledge, use Vengeful Spirit (which won't kill the Shade with a nail upgrade), and then proceed with a regular Shade skip. It's a skip used in Myla% (where you don't get Crystal Dash).

I see. So while not do-able by pure pogoing, but I guess still do-able via shade skips which is essentially normal pogo but you intentionally die once in strategic locations to use your own shade as an additional platform (which I just looked up since I don't know anything about Hollow Knight speedrunning strats).

So I guess it's do-able without Crystal Heart after all. Then again, not recommended unless you're really hardcore lol.

There's actually a pretty interesting story behind that skip, which is explained in a video by fireb0rn.

I watched the full video. That is just amazing, with the development of new routes in speedrunning and how much critical thinking is put into breaking the game apart for optimisation of the runs, or even going so far to reinvent the wheels.

We all subconsciously do it in video game to certain extent. Like how we will over time, develop slightly different personal approach for the same in-game challenge through repetition-based optimisation (I always like to use the example of the run up to Undead Burg from Firelink Shrine in Dark Souls 1 since everyone eventually develop their own way of optimising that stair climb after doing it for hundreds of times). But speedrunners really takes that to another level.

fireb0rn himself is quite impressive at doing things. He's done PoP in complete darkness, hitless.
