Healing while full health

I just unlocked the desolate dive but when I press it it doesn't work but heals me instead. Even when I am full health, it expends soul and shows the healing animation. This happened before too but I didn't care too much but now I can't progress :(
Has anyone experienced something similar/ knows how to fix it?

Jump before you use it? I'm not even sure if it ever works while standing still.

Are you sure you're not holding down the button? To cast a spell, don't hold the button. Also, there is a quick cast button which is only for spells, you could try that too.

Jump, hold "down" (left stick down or arrow key down) and press B (red/cast/heal key) once while holding it.

You're pressing the Focus/Cast key, make a keybind that's only purpose is for using spells and not healing, it has faster input and it's better so you don't accidentally heal, for desolate dive it tells you the instructions on how to use it when you acquire it just like every ability in the game. Hold the Down key and use your spell key to headbutt the ground and destroy clueless enemies.

As mentioned above, always the Quick Cast button instead of the Focus button to use spells. Focus is too slow. Use it for healing only. Check your control set up to find which button/key is assigned to it. (I think default for Quick Cast on a controller is the right shoulder button, but I don't know what it would be for a keyboard.)

Beyond that, I want to specify that you CAN use Desolate Dive while just standing on the ground. I've done it many times. The benefit of doing a tiny hop first is just that it's faster.
