there are some save file editors online which you can use to alter in the game, you can just google hollow knight save editor and get this below link
https://bloodorca.github.io/hollow/
the steps are also there I think but I don't know properly as I never used it before but I've seen some videos on it, you basically import your local save file stored in you PC into that link, it'll appear in text form where you can edit values, then download the edited file and place it back into you local save directory, open your game and changes will appear.
No, you won't download the editor, its an online editor, you only download your edited SAVE file after using the online editor in the browser. Look into this reddit link, they clarify your doubts

Dreamnailing Marissa is really not a big deal, it won't affect any story or gameplay. Going through all this save file editing isn't worth it.
It's completely safe. Also, the code is fully open-source, everyone can look into it.
There is no other way to edit a save file, without using some third-party software, unless you are a programmer who can create their own tool to do that.
Remember to create save backups before any editing.
If you will be interested on what value to change in the save to bring Marissa back, let me know — I can help with that.
